Mamdani: Today, as a result of this decision, children who have fled violence, trafficking, war, and abuse will walk into courtrooms alone. Children. And they have been alone before. Many of them had no other option but to travel here by themselves across thousands of miles. When they made it here to our city, they thought that maybe the worst would be behind them, that things would be different. But now they will stand alone again as they face attacks from a trained government attorney across the aisle whose sole objective is to deport them back to the place they endured so much to escape. Some of these children are teenagers. Some are 10 years old. Some are five years old. Some are even younger. Many do not yet even speak the language in which they are to defend themselves. And even if they do, these are children that we are speaking about. They do not know how to navigate a courtroom. They do not know how to fill out an asylum application. They do not know how to ask for relief. They do not know how to gather evidence or to plead their case. And yet the consequences that they will face simply for coming to this country in search of a better life will be immediate and severe. Without legal representation, fewer than one percent of immigrant children are granted immigration relief. The federal government will tell you that they have fulfilled this contract with other legal service providers, yet they have selected firms that lack the credibility and the seriousness to protect these children. Take one organization whose founder and former CEO, a retired ICE agent, resigned due to sexual misconduct allegations.

Today, I dedicated two ‘Pind Infotainment Centres’in rural Mohali, Punjab, to create shared community spaces for learning, recreation and togetherness. Built using my MPLAD funds, these one-of-a-kind centres feature a library, indoor sports facilities, table tennis, TV, projector and music systems. They are spaces where residents can relax and connect and where children can read, study and play in a safe, peaceful environment. Every rupee of Punjabis’ money must be used for Punjab’s progress, especially to create secure spaces where our children can learn, play and thrive.

We could spend another 45 minutes on this, but the short version is that the fragmentation of the family has contributed to much of the online radicalization and polarization we see today. When more young people grow up in unstable or chaotic environments, they search elsewhere for belonging, identity, and affirmation. They look for attachment where they can find it—often online. So much of this begins at home, with the early bonds and experiences of childhood. Those attachments shape how we see ourselves and how we relate to others for the rest of our lives.
