Law enforcement agencies say they are ready for Tuesday’s planned protests. The right to protest peacefully is protected by the Constitution and must be respected. However, there should be zero tolerance for criminality. Anyone who uses the protests as an excuse to loot, intimidate, destroy property, or incite violence must face the full might of the law. Peaceful protest is a constitutional right; lawlessness is not.

A direct question for President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto: If one of your own children joined a peaceful protest, would you want them shot dead? In 2024, police killed 104 Kenyans during protests. In 2025, that number rose to 125. Since June 2024, the Ruto regime has carried out 83 enforced disappearances and over 3,000 arbitrary arrests. Public protests are a form of free speech. We are not expected to agree with the messaging of every public protest (I often hate them). But, boil it down and we have a simple choice: 1. Let public protests take place ... and in some cases put up with some minor inconvenience. If things get unruly, well ... that's why we have a police force. 2. Use state power to say 'yes to this protest' but 'no to that protest' ... and then use state violence to physically stop all the illegal protests. This is what is known as a 'police state.' The Libertarian Party supports the adoption of a US style First Amendment in our state and federal constitutions: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO PEACEABLY TO ASSEMBLE AND TO PETITION THE GOVERNMENT FOR A REDRESS OF GRIEVANCES.' I have no clue who this guy is or what his political views are. Party aside he is telling the truth about a basic function and reality of American citizenship. These are the kind of people we need leading this country and our communities. Tough, real, experienced. They tell you exactly how it is, no sugar coating. I never say people don’t have a right to protest. I’ve lead peaceful protests and we emphasized the peaceful… we should be protesting in this country, the question is what, where and to whose end? I personally think conservatives should be in the streets everyday for any number of abominable breaches of their constitutional rights. (cough cough… taxes, secure elections). However, when we are heading into 3 years of non-stop protests in our streets for foreign agendas, when do we say enough is enough? As it stands at the moment, Australian people wanting to express their discontent with the goings-on in Australia via protest are having to "work around" existing foreign protests. Yesterday, public transport and Australians were impacted in Melbourne yet again due to protests of a foreign nature. It's "little" things like this that we turn a blind eye to, that allow the destruction of our country to continue. If you aren't out there protesting about Australian affairs, go home! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.... Australia is for Australians, and Australian streets are for Australians. Keep your wars off our shores!

I thank my fellow Senators for their participation in a successful debate on my Motion in defence of free speech and peaceful freedom of association. I’m not sure if some understood how the Government’s "Misinformation and Disinformation Bill" (MAD for short) will limit the right to protest. As demonstrated during COVID, posts promoting protests were banned and organisers arrested. This Bill would allow the Government to ban posts that promote protests as a threat to public order, which is why my motion mentioned both free speech and the right to protest. In my speech, I drew attention to the bigger picture – that predatory foreign billionaires have bought Australia, and this Bill prevents us talking about it. One Nation will continue to fight for human rights and I am pleased to know we will not be alone.
