Want the UK’s £15 billion a year in international aid to do more good? Then benchmark our programs against giving cash directly to find out how well programs REALLY work. A great idea for @RachelReevesMP’s new Office for Value for Money. 🧵

Better still, a cash transfer can improve not just one but all aspects of multi-dimensional poverty. More than a benchmark, direct cash should be our default, as my colleague @WrightYolande argues in @Devex ⬇️

@USAID even if people "waste" the money they would probably spend it locally, which surely helps the local economy?

@Real_Ezra_James @USAID But the council wont let me keep a cow on what should be common land in the UK, just by my council flat or id have one for my neighbours on benifits that dont pay enough or are stopped for no reason aka PIP even when lifelong disabled. I cant have milk myself as im allergic.

@USAID Over simplifying @RoryStewartUK - when the supply is there and allied to knowledge people have (not undermined by the marketing of corporates or the perpetuation of humanitarian Leviathans). What we should be looking at are the blended programming where The People have choice.

@USAID @RoryStewartUK and @USAID @marketlinksorg - the piece I developed to layer programming and build a continuum. Still not the panacea but a framework where we can look at the factors we can, cannot, manage and or influence.
