🔴Zimbabwe is facing a severe maternal mortality crisis, with a staggering 960 deaths per 100 000 live births. In January 2025 alone, about 300 infants and 54 women died during excrutiating childbirths. This is three times higher than the global average and almost double the Sub-Saharan Africa average. The main causes of maternal deaths in are pregnancy-induced hypertension, postpartum hemorrhage, puerperal sepsis, malaria, and obstructed labour. HIV and Aids-related conditions also contribute to a significant number of maternal deaths, accounting for 25% of all maternal mortality. One of the major challenges is the lack of access to skilled care during childbirth. Only 66% of births are assisted by a skilled provider, while 13% are assisted by traditional birth attendants or untrained relatives and friends. A staggering 3% of births are unassisted. To address this crisis, the Zimbabwean government and international partners have launched initiatives to revitalise Maternity Waiting Homes (MWHs). MWHs provide accommodation for high-risk pregnant women near health facilities, reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by increasing access to skilled care. Zimbabwe's health system, like everything else, has collapsed due to leadership, governance and policy failures.

Isabel Lopez, 27, from St. Paul was hit with a federal indictment for multiple counts of assaulting and impeding officers, including punching an FBI agent at the time of her arrest, plus obstruction during civil disorder. She resolved the entire case by paying $25 and walking out. No real prison time. No meaningful consequences. You can assault federal agents in Minnesota and basically get a slap on the wrist. This is exactly why people have lost faith in the system.

It was a revealing experience for me during the visits, last week, to Gombe, Katsina, and Sokoto States, where we had the opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges and progress in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Meeting with the Governors and key stakeholders, we reinforced our commitment to maternal and child mortality reduction, hospital revitalization, and expanding access to essential health services. In Gombe State Government of Gombe State, I commended HE Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya leadership in immunization and healthcare financing while highlighting how the $1 billion Project Hope Project HOPE will complement state-level investments, ensuring sustainable health outcomes at the grassroots. In Katsina State Katsina State Government, I underscored the urgency of tackling maternal mortality, where 15 local government areas contribute significantly to the national burden. Through the MNH-MaMII Initiative, NHIA NIGERIA, we aim to work with the state to ensure that every pregnant woman receives the care she needs. In Sokoto State Sokoto Government House, where maternal mortality stands at 977 per 100,000 live births, collaboration is key. With the Emergency Medical System #NEMSAS and ambulance scheme, expanded primary healthcare revitalization, and routine immunization efforts, we are ensuring that no woman or child is left behind. Across these visits, we reaffirmed our whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, working in alignment with H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (#NHSRII). It was a revealing experience for me during the visits, last week, to Gombe, Katsina, and Sokoto States, where we had the opportunity to witness firsthand the challenges and progress in Nigeria’s healthcare system. Meeting with the Governors and key stakeholders, we reinforced our commitment to maternal and child mortality reduction, hospital revitalization, and expanding access to essential health services. In Gombe State Government of Gombe State, I commended HE Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya leadership in immunization and healthcare financing while highlighting how the $1 billion Project Hope Project HOPE will complement state-level investments, ensuring sustainable health outcomes at the grassroots. In Katsina State Katsina State Government, I underscored the urgency of tackling maternal mortality, where 15 local government areas contribute significantly to the national burden. Through the MNH-MaMII Initiative, NHIA NIGERIA, we aim to work with the state to ensure that every pregnant woman receives the care she needs. In Sokoto State Sokoto Government House, where maternal mortality stands at 977 per 100,000 live births, collaboration is key. With the Emergency Medical System #NEMSAS and ambulance scheme, expanded primary healthcare revitalization, and routine immunization efforts, we are ensuring that no woman or child is left behind. Across these visits, we reaffirmed our whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach, working in alignment with H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (#NHSRII). On November 7, 2024, the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH INFO) launched a free cesarean section outreach under the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (#MAMII SWAp Coordination Office), marking a significant step in the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s (Federal Ministry of Health, NIGERIA) efforts to save lives. Two weeks after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Insurance Authority (@NHIAnigeria), this outreach has already started to deliver free, lifesaving care to women, removing the financial barriers that too often cost lives. We are at the early stages but optimistic that we can expand this carefully and rapidly in the period ahead. MAMII is central to our fight against maternal mortality, particularly intensely targeting 172 high-burden local government areas that account for over half of all maternal deaths. By providing free cesarean sections for poor and vulnerable women who meet eligibility criteria, and ensuring these services are accessible in both public and private facilities empaneled by NHIA, this initiative demonstrates how health equity can become a reality. As part of the broader strategy, the revitalized National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (Nemsas) ensures timely transport to care, while health workers and community efforts continue to generate awareness and strengthen access to emergency obstetric services. This outreach at ATBUTH exemplifies MAMII in action, reinforcing the Tinubu Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda and commitment to reducing maternal and newborn deaths across Nigeria. The FMOHSW commends the health workers and partners for making this possible and reaffirms its commitment to ultimately delivering care that reaches every mother and child in need.

Zero deaths. That is the mission. A dedicated team of forest officers, patrolling staff, loco pilots, drone operators and control centre monitors works round the clock at Tamil Nadu’s AI-powered Elephant Control and Command Centre in Madukkarai in Coimbatore to keep elephants safe. In just over two and a half years, the system has facilitated around 9,481 safe elephant crossings ensuring Zero elephant deaths on Railway Tracks, demonstrating how technology, human vigilance and teamwork can come together to protect wildlife. The system has generated more than 7,116 real-time alerts for railway authorities and loco pilots, leading to 3,821 instances where trains were slowed down or stopped to allow elephants to cross safely. Beyond elephants, the system has also detected deer, gaurs and leopards, creating a comprehensive AI-enabled wildlife monitoring network. The Government of Tamil Nadu continues to strengthen the system. AI-powered drones have been deployed for wider landscape surveillance, extending monitoring beyond fixed thermal cameras and providing real-time situational awareness of elephant movements. No system can ever be perfect, and the worry never really goes away. But we must keep learning, improving and doing better.
