We don’t see them out giving newspaper articles, talking about their ‘right to buy sex’. The reason that we don’t is that if you listen to the way they talk about women, that is the best advert for criminalising them that you will ever, ever hear.

Obama: When I think back to a year ago, I remember talking to some people, who would say, this election doesn't matter all that much. That however the next president ended up being, it wasn't going to matter to them. If nothing else, the last nine months should have cured us of that idea. Because the stakes are now clear. We do not need to speculate about the dangers to our democracy. We do not need to wonder about whether vulnerable people will be hurt, or ask ourselves how much meaner our culture needs to become. We witnessed it. Elections do matter. And they matter for you.

Interesting video from then Speaker of Parliament Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani in 1987, in response to a question from a foreign reporter about Iran closing the Strait of Hormoz after Kuwait asked the US Navy to get involved in the ongoing tanker war: "We never said we're just going to casually go and close the Strait of Hormoz. We would prefer the Strait of Hormoz is not closed. If the Strait of Hormoz is closed it causes us harm too. We will also suffer damage. We have always emphasized that we will close the Strait of Hormoz when the Persian Gulf cannot be used by us. If the Persian Gulf cannot be used by us then we will also make the Persian Gulf not usable for others. This is our policy. The people that have deprived us from that Gulf, they must also be deprived. And if we reach that day our threat is firm and we will close it, but we hope the world is wise enough not to bring that day and we consider it quite unlikely that day will happen."

The thing is, if we didn't have to live with any of these people, we wouldn't think about them at all. We'd have no reason to - we don't admire their behaviour, their creations (what little there is of them) and we don't want anything from them. So, we'd just never think about them.
