For Tenet, Christopher Nolan opted to create a full-scale, painted hallway rather than relying on CGI effects.

TENET (2020) contains fewer than 300 visual effects shots, fewer than most romantic comedies. Christopher Nolan filmed nearly every inverted sequence practically, with the cast performing fights & movements in reverse instead of relying on visual effects.

Christopher Nolan bought a real decommissioned Boeing 747 and crashed it on set for Tenet because it was actually cheaper than using miniatures and CGI.

Christopher Nolan gave a massive, massive shoutout to Guillermo del Toro as a major inspiration for how Nolan brought various creatures in The Odyssey to life. In an interview with Los Angeles Times , Nolan shared that Del Toro taught him to approach monsters the way you approach any other character & to make use of human-made practical effects rather than relying just on CGI. It’s a tremendous interview & Nolan is really candid- I strongly recommend the full interview.

Behind the scenes on THE DARK KNIGHT. Christopher Nolan prefers to use practical effects over CGI wherever possible, as the astonishing miniature work on the film shows.

Inception is one of the first major sci-fi films with fewer than 500 VFX shots, compared to over 2000 in most modern blockbusters. Nolan wanted the audience to feel the space, not just see it, relying heavily on practical effects over CGI.

The Boeing crash scene in Tenet (2020) is Christopher Nolan doing blockbuster spectacle the hard way. Instead of CGI, production actually crashed a real 747 into a building, which somehow makes the whole sequence feel even more absurd on screen.

Rewatching Tenet (🌟🌟🌟🌟) turned out to be the highlight of my weekend so far. I wrote a lengthy review below detailing why I believe Tenet is a much better film than I initially thought. I would love for you to give my review a full read- I talk about how Tenet, Oppenheimer & now The Odyssey are companion pieces from Christopher Nolan.

Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Doesn’t Use CGI and Shoots on IMAX Robert Downey Jr.: Why Christopher Nolan doesn’t use CGI. Christopher Nolan: I find CGI, however versatile it is, but it always tends to feel a little safe to me. Christopher Nolan: I think if you want something to have a bit of bite, you’ve got the imagery to a better threat, even if it’s a miniature, even if it’s something very fake, but something real on camera. Christopher Nolan: I think it gives you a better result. Robert Downey Jr.: Why does Christopher Nolan shoot on film? Christopher Nolan: I shoot on film because it’s the highest quality imaging format ever devised, particularly IMAX film, large-format film. Christopher Nolan: Film shows you the world kind of the way your eye sees it. Robert Downey Jr.: Where does Christopher Nolan get his ideas? Christopher Nolan: All over the place. Different on every film. Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer, I’d been interested in a long time, didn’t know that much about the specifics of his story, then came to the book American Prometheus, and that absolutely got me hooked. Christopher Nolan: So, in the case of Oppenheimer, the idea… I trace it right back to, like, as a kid in the eighties, and we all thought we were gonna die in nuclear Armageddon. Robert Downey Jr.: Absolutely. Me too.

For Tenet (2020), Christopher Nolan avoided CGI for the chase — real cars and fast reverse driving. The 8 km highway scene was filmed twice: once forward & once in reverse, then stitched together. Stunt drivers even trained to drive backward at 60 mph.

Lying to Christopher Nolan doesn't work. Robert Pattinson once tried to fake a family emergency on the set of Tenet to audition for The Batman (2022). “I said I had a family emergency.” Nolan caught him off guard: “You’re doing the Batman audition, aren’t you?”

The jaw-dropping plane crash scene in ‘Tenet’ was done using a real Boeing 747, not CGI. Director Christopher Nolan originally planned to use visual effects, but realized it would actually be cheaper and more realistic to crash a real plane into the building. The production bought a decommissioned aircraft and filmed the crash practically in a single massive stunt. The result became one of the most ambitious and visually stunning practical effects ever put on screen. ✈️💥🎬

Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy didn’t just redefine Batman, it reshaped how superhero films are made. Nolan insisted on practical effects over CGI, even flipping a real 18 wheel truck in The Dark Knight (2008) without digital tricks. Christian Bale’s Batman was grounded in realism, fear, and psychology rather than comic-book spectacle, while Heath Ledger’s Joker was written without a fixed backstory to feel truly chaotic. Nolan also became the first director to bring IMAX cameras into a superhero film, changing the visual scale of the genre forever. Batman wasn’t just a hero here , he was a cinematic experiment that worked. 🦇
