One of the migrants had previously been charged with attempted murder for shooting someone in the leg. The police were called after one of the men was spotted with a gun next to a school. A neighbor said the owner of the home had been trying to get them out for the “longest period of time” but couldn’t thanks to New York’s squatting laws. The men were charged with “criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of controlled substance and acting in a manner injurious to a child.” (ABC7) All of the men except for two were released without bail. May 7 Suffolk County Police arrested two parents following a fight at a flag football game in Wyandanch. A fight broke out between players from Southampton High School and Wyandanch Memorial High School following a varsity-level game between the schools and two parents became involved in the fight. Shalaya Gatlin punched a 16-year-old female in the chest and another 16-year-old female in the face, and threated a 15-year-old female. Gatlin, 37, of Shirley, was charged with three counts of Harassment 2nd Degree and three counts of Acting in a Manner to Injure a Child. Jonathan Perez engaged in a physical altercation with a 16-year-old male, threatened people with a knife, and threatened to shoot up the school. Perez, 35, of Shirley, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th Degree, Making a Threat of Mass Harm, Menacing 3rd Degree, Harassment 2nd Degree, and Acting in a Manner to Injure a Child. Yet, 12 states in the country have these laws, with the ones in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand being the strongest of all. The punishment under these laws ranges from three to ten years, along with a fine between 10,000 and 3 lakh. But is it sufficient? Why don’t we have a nationwide law in force, a fast-track court system for trials, and legal aid for the victims? Are we waiting for the time when Hindu girls will be dragged out of their houses, taken to courts, and converted for nikah in front of their parents, as has happened in Pakistan? Here's what I think.
