Despite immense pressure from Western powers favoring Egypt, Ethiopia made great sacrifices to complete this historic project. Ethiopia’s right to use its own resources and its fair share of the Abay (the Nile River) has long been undermined and misunderstood, as if Egypt owns the water a complete lie. Ethiopia contributes more than 85% of the Nile’s water through its rivers, yet it has historically been denied equitable access.
