CBC (taxpayer-funded broadcaster) sent out guidance to reporters and editors instructing them “do not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks.” Egyptian-born CBC senior director Basem Boshra reminded journalists to use neutral, descriptive language, such as “the Sept. 11 attacks” or noting that hijackings led to jet crashes, rather than applying the word “terrorism” directly. Network leadership has argued that words like “terrorist” and “terrorism” carry heavy emotional and political weight, and avoiding them helps maintain journalistic impartiality.
