For too long, Labour’s housing model has served private developers, not people, and failed to deliver genuinely affordable housing. Today, Geraldine Coggins will announce the first step in her plans to change that as Green Mayor

In 2021 Glenveagh were as good as gifted the public land at Oscar Traynor Woods. Today, their profits are up 103%, for every unit they deliver €50,000 is pure profit while their ‘affordable housing’ isn’t affordable and their building standards have resulted in work having to be halted! The private market does not have the capacity or the interest to provide genuinely affordable housing, this is why we need to break with them and end our dependence on profit-driven developers. A state construction company can build genuinely affordable housing because first and foremost it exists to house people, not to make a profit off of peoples housing insecurity. That’s the difference. In 2025 we need a bold and radical housing movement to fight back against the governments failed housing model. There are alternatives. There are solutions. Join PBP and help us build the fight for a future that puts people before profit!

In China they believe houses are for living in not for speculation or profit. It has resulted in 90% of Chinese people owning their homes while people in the U.S. struggle to pay rent. China also invests in social housing while the U.S. government gives money to for-profit real estate developers to build “affordable housing” that is NOT actually affordable.

To combat the housing shortage, I'll fight to build millions of units of affordable housing — reinstating the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to build what the private market won't. I'd double housing vouchers, make rent tax deductible just like mortgages, and ban private equity from buying up our homes. 🏠 Housing déjà vu! Nothing new in the Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael repackaged housing plan. Nothing to make housing affordable, get rents under control or ramp-up delivery of council homes needed. A generation will remain locked-out of homeownership. Another housing plan for the property funds, corporate landlords and big developers but not for you. We won’t stop fighting for a new direction that makes housing affordable for workers and families.

This Government has put the future of the NHT and your housing benefits in jeopardy. We are proud of having built the NHT to provide affordable housing for the people of Jamaica. Michael Manley must be turning in his grave to see its destruction under the current government. We cannot accept that! The next PNP government will restore the National Housing Trust to its rightful role as the central agency for financing affordable home ownership in this country. We will end the Government’s annual extraction of $11.4 Billion from the NHT. We will refocus the NHT on financing the development of affordable housing for Jamaicans.
