EU-Mercosur deal. Not much of a big deal. Winners: mostly ultra-powerful lobbies in Brussels. And as exporters, mostly Germany and Italy. For Mercosur, not much of a change. Top exporters to the EU are China (20%) and the US 13%). Brazil has only 1.8% and Argentina 0.3%. Lots of subsidies, quotas and exceptions will be in place. Parmigiano Reggiano and French champagne will continue to be protected, while Brazil will not allow an invasion of European cars.

Here China is pointing out the fact that the US has continued its lucrative trade with Russia, while it is putting enormous pressure on other countries to stop trading with Russia. I noticed already in 2014 that Germany was forced to stop much of its trade with Russia, so that US firms took those market shares. Sanctions are what others must suffer. The US is special and always above all rules.

I had a good meeting with the President of the European Commission, Ursula Ursula von der Leyen. We discussed steps that will help protect the lives of Ukrainians, restore security, and bring us closer to an unconditional ceasefire. We also talked about strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the EU, particularly through the ReArm Europe initiative. Special attention was given to the preparation of the EU's 17th sanctions package. It is crucial that this package targets key sectors of the Russian economy and serves as one of the elements of pressure on Russia to restore peace. We value the support of the European Union. Together, we are working for the safety of people, a just peace, and Ukraine’s European future.

Kaja Kallas: "The EU today blacklisted Russia for the risk of money laundering. This will slow down and increase the costs of transactions with Russian banks." What does that mean for Russia? All transactions with Russian banks will now be seen as maximum high risk. If a European bank deals with Russia, it will be under additional scrutiny to prove they are not laundering money. Russia might have to route its trade through several intermediaries, pay higher fees, resort to more cash or barter schemes. This can also concern banks from countries "friendly" to Russia if they deal with European banks.
