#Ethiopian Foreign Minister: #Ethiopia’s State Formation Still Disputed, and is shaped by a Culture of Violence The following is what the current Ethiopian Foreign Minister said about the flawed nature of Ethiopia’s state formation and how it is still contested and shaped by a violent political culture. This is verbatim; I have not added any opinion. 'The process through which the Ethiopian state was formed is rather unique on the African continent. In most parts of the world, states are formed through conflict, violence, and bloodshed. That does not make Ethiopia unique. What makes Ethiopia unique—particularly in the African context—is that the violence was carried out by indigenous, native forces. The main protagonists in this process were Ethiopians themselves. By contrast, in the history of most African countries, state formation was the outcome of colonial conquest, with significant involvement of European actors. So, we have a state formation process driven by local political forces, but we did not have the opportunity to strengthen or cement that process through a social contract, nor did we have the chance to heal the wounds and contradictions that emerged during state formation. As a result, the legitimacy of the state was questioned and contested by some. This contestation has persisted throughout the formation of the state and has been exacerbated by subsequent events. Some have challenged the very legitimacy of the Ethiopian state; others have contested its nature, its vision, its identity, and its narratives. Some have found it difficult to accept its institutions and their configurations. Thus, there have always been fundamental contradictions stemming from Ethiopia’s state formation process, and we have not adequately addressed them in a way that would create consensus among key actors. Another layer we need to consider is that we have a very violent and autocratic political culture. Whenever there are contests for power, political differences, or disagreements over policy or institutional arrangements, the method of resolving them has more often than not been conflict. Imposing one’s will and vision on others through violence and force has been how we have conducted politics for generations. And once in power, using autocratic means to consolidate authority has been common practice. This autocratic and forceful approach, combined with the flawed state formation process, has produced many wounds, grievances, and violations. We have not been able to address these in a way that is satisfactory to most Ethiopians. On top of this, attempts to resolve these problems have often been divisive, emphasizing differences at the expense of what unites us. As a result, our politics has become polarized and ethnic-based.

When a political party has completed the Commission’s prescribed forms and uploaded its lists onto the Commission’s own system before the hour, has that party submitted its lists? The movement says it has. The Commission says it has not. That is a disagreement between a political party and a public institution about what a statute means, and this country built a specialist court for precisely that. The Electoral Court will decide it. The ANC will abide by what the courts decide. I say that now, before judgment, so that nobody need ask afterwards. I want to address the judgment the Electoral Court handed down on Friday in the matter of the UDF Party, because it has been reported as a blow to the ANC. The Court held that the Commission has no power to exempt one party from a deadline that binds all others. The African National Congress agrees with that. We have never asked for an exemption. We have never asked for an extension. We are not asking for one now. What the UDF asked for and what the ANC asks for are different things, and Friday’s judgment is the clearest statement yet of that difference. And to those who have warned the Commission against giving the ANC “preferential treatment”, I say this plainly. The ANC wants none. Whatever relief the Court grants, the movement has asked that it apply to every affected party on the same terms — to the forty-four other parties as much as to us. If the ANC succeeds, two thousand and ninety-three candidates who are not ours succeed with us. That is the only kind of relief this movement would accept. Now let me speak about the Electoral Commission again. The Electoral Commission is a Chapter Nine institution of our Constitution. The African National Congress, more than any other organisation in this country, argued for it, negotiated it and built it. Through seven national elections and six local elections, the ANC has accepted every substantive result the Commission has declared — including the result of 2024, which took from this movement the majority it had held for thirty years. We accepted it on the night. We did not go to a stage and call the Commission a thief. That record is who we are, and it is not for sale in a dispute over six councils. So let me be clear about what the ANC is doing and what it is not doing. The ANC is not attacking the Electoral Commission. The ANC disagrees with the Commission on a point of law, and it has taken that disagreement to the court that Parliament created to hear it. Disagreement in a court is how a democracy respects an institution. Disagreement on a stage, with slogans, is how a democracy weakens one. The movement has chosen the court, respectfully. There are parties in this country who have used this matter to relitigate their own grievances against the Commission. The ANC will not join them, and it will not be used by them. Where the Commission is attacked for doing its work, this movement will defend it, as it has always defended it. We have a responsibility to the institutions of this state that the Commission’s other critics do not carry, and we will carry it even while we are in court against it. A year ago Keir Starmer was asked to introduce a blasphemy law. He didn't say no. Today he said he wouldn't introduce a blasphemy law through an Islamophobia definition. But we know his Government has been working on one for MONTHS and they are refusing to let the public see it - despite inviting left-wing activist groups to provide feedback. They must publish the definition BEFORE a decision is made so that we can all scrutinise the definition and the impact it will have on freedom of speech.

This was not a small operation. This was a major operation short of an actual invasion, and it failed. There is just no doubt that the military operation was not a success. The law demands that jurors return a just verdict based SOLELY on the evidence presented, not on biases. Saying they ‘knew that this was a turning point to make it better for other women’ is a flagrant violation, not only of the law, but the purpose of a jury, and the Clancy jurors are indignant about it.

Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on the collapse of FCAS with France: That the end for FCAS came was no longer surprising. It had been pointing that way for quite some time. It came down above all to tensions — let me put it that way — between the two major industries. With the knowledge of today, we would not set up this project the way it was set up back then. That is a lesson we must draw from this. It was an ambitious, large European project that has now shattered against reality. We have to live with that. There is absolutely no reason to assume that the German-French relationship is strained because of this. This changes nothing about the relationship with France. There are a multitude of smaller and larger projects on our agenda. As for the new jet — we will see which paths we take. We have already been in talks with various actors for months. You can imagine that I will not publicly speculate here about which project it could be.

The centuries of conflict between the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish is not a model of successful “diversity”. It is proof of, despite our ethnic proximity and shared Christian faith, just how difficult it is for tribes to live in peace. It was hard enough with the native populations of the British Isles. It is impossible to have a cohesive society with all the foreign colonies we have imported into our midst. We are not at the start of this experiment. We are in the middle of it, and it is going horribly. It has to end.
