📜✨ “Foreign to Scripture? (Relics)” — apparently we’re doing a surprise Friday-night Peter’s Barque drop. This song has been a LONG time coming. Relics have been sitting in my song queue for ages. But then the internet spent the last few days losing its collective mind over the veneration... of the relics of Saint Agatha. “Pagan.” “Idolatry.” “Morbid.” “Foreign to Scripture.” So… I bumped this one WAY up the queue. And I’m dropping it now. On a Friday night. Because apparently that’s what we’re doing. 😂 The funny thing is, Scripture itself is remarkably comfortable with holy things getting very, very physical. Joseph makes Israel promise to carry his bones out of Egypt—and centuries later, Moses does. A dead man touches the bones of Elisha—and gets back up. People reach for the garment of Jesus and are healed. The sick are laid where Peter’s shadow might fall across them. Cloths that touched Saint Paul are carried to the sick—and God works miracles through them. And the Jewish world itself was far less squeamish about human remains than modern Western Christians often are. Around the time of Christ, families could return to tombs after decomposition, gather the bones of their dead, and place them in ossuaries. What feels “morbid” to modern American sensibilities is not therefore foreign to the biblical world. Then there’s the early Church. Saint Polycarp—a disciple of Saint John—was martyred around A.D. 155. The Christians gathered his bones, describing them as more precious than jewels and finer than gold, and preserved them in a suitable place where they could gather to commemorate his martyrdom. That’s not medieval Catholicism. That’s Christianity with barely enough room between it and the Apostles for the ink to dry. And here’s the deeper point: Christianity is an Incarnational religion. Mud on blind eyes. Water. Oil. Bread. Wine. Hands laid upon heads. A garment. A shadow. A handkerchief. Flesh and blood and dust and bone. There is no magic in marrow. Relics aren't lucky charms. Saints aren't little gods. God owes us no miracle because we touched the right object. But the God who created matter has never seemed particularly reluctant to use it. And the Word became flesh. At a Q&A, John MacArthur is asked about Christian nationalism. The kingdom of God is not of this world. Jesus said that. He said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would [fight].” His kingdom is not of this world. The kingdom of this world is a separate world; they’re not linked together. Let me say it another way: Nothing that happens in any nation, whether it’s a Communist nation, a Muslim nation, or a “quasi-Christian” nation, or an atheistic nation—nothing in that nation politically, socially has anything to do with the advancement of the kingdom of God, because the kingdom of God is separate from that system. God, in His sovereignty, is building His church, “and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it,” Jesus said. So the idea that you should link up some political effort, some political process, some social process, some gain of power or influence in a culture as part of the advance of Christianity is alien to Christianity. You never have our Lord approaching anything like that, nor the apostles, and particularly the apostle Paul. He sought to gain no favor with the Roman Empire whatsoever, or for that matter, with any other of the rulers that he ran into during his life. Now, that is not to say that we are indifferent to what happens in the nation. We’ve been talking about that the last couple of Sunday mornings. We have to be the people who uphold righteousness. When we come to vote, we want to vote for that which is the most righteous option. Obviously, we can’t vote in righteousness, but we have to vote in a way that reflects our commitment to the righteousness of God. So we couldn’t possibly elect somebody who was an abortionist, somebody who was LGBTQ or LGBTQ-affirming, or any other deviation from God’s righteous moral standard. So it gets harder, doesn’t it, nowadays, because even sometimes when politicians are more conservative and anti-abortion, they may be sinful and wicked in some other categories, and it’s very hard to find out who is really honest and who is simply dishonest and seeking power. But in the end, we do what we can with the understanding that the responsibility of the church is not to advance the kingdom of this world. That’s a faulty viewpoint. Christian nationalism is usually tied to what is called post-millennialism, and that is the view that the church, somehow, by influencing the culture, can bring in the kingdom of Christ. In other words, it’s the idea not that Christ returns and sets up His kingdom, but that the church establishes His kingdom and then hands it to Him. That is not what Scripture teaches. What Scripture teaches is what we’re learning from the book of Revelation. Things are going to get worse and worse and worse. And the end of human history is not the church triumphant, reigning in the world and taking over the structures of human kingdoms; that’s not what happens. At the end of human history, the believers are persecuted and murdered, and that’s the very opposite of what Christian nationalism would anticipate. So we believe the Bible teaches that things get worse and worse, headed toward the wrath of God, which we’re seeing in Revelation, and then our Lord returns, Himself, to establish His kingdom is clearly what we read in the book of Revelation. OK?

After Saint Anthony died on 13 June 1231, his body was buried at the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua. When his tomb was opened in 1981, an official scientific examination of his remains was undertaken on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of his death. Francis Schaffer in 1982 answering the question of what has gone wrong with evangelicals that allowed the Christian consensus to be lost in our nation: "I think a false view of spirituality, a Platonic view of spirituality which follows Plato, but certainly isn't biblical. And that is that spirituality is shut up to a small area of life...in this view, everything is worldly that isn't in this little box of spirituality. Now, as I look at the Bible, this is exactly 1000% backwards. There are certain sinful things that God tells us are sinful, and we ought to take those and set them aside...and then, everything else is spiritual." Robertson: "Elaborate on that. Everything then in the world, because you're saying that Jesus has a plan and a worldview and a purpose. He's not just God of the church; He's God of everything." Schaeffer: "Absolutely. He made it. And one day, the wonder is, Jesus is coming back and is going to be the redemption of all things...God is interested in the totality of life—art, music, literature, but also the political life. So true spirituality means the Lordship of Christ in the totality of life and not just a small part of it." Robertson: "The liberal press, particularly, would try to keep conservative Christians or evangelicals out of political life, and there's this great pressure to make fun of you when you get in politics, and they don't think it should be. Another name for that is post-constitutional mob rule. “The right has to give up on free markets.” My problem with Tucker isn’t the Jew hatred, that’s between him and God, although I have the right to call him out on it and I will everyday. My problem with Tucker and his merry little band of comrades is that they are authoritarians who don’t believe in freedom and liberty. That is what makes them dangerous because they use the Israel issue and the Jew hatred as a scapegoat to get you to be so frustrated and angry that you give up your freaking civil liberties and your freedoms and give in to authoritarians. That’s why Tucker is dangerous not because he’s a Jew hater. The only way America Only works is if we are going to be conquering the rest of the world and bringing them down under us and if that’s what the goal is, then I would like to hear people say it openly and honestly.

Tucker might want to spend less time with the Quran and more time with the Bible. So for the 100th time, here is biblical proof, historical proof both Catholic and Protestant that he is lying. On purpose. To push an agenda. One that is at odds with the Bible. To say the Jews are not God’s chosen people is not just wrong. It is a denial of what the Bible clearly teaches, and it shows a failure to understand the foundations of Christianity itself. In the Old Testament, God declares Israel’s chosenness beyond dispute. Deuteronomy 7:6 says, “The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” In Genesis 17:7, God tells Abraham, “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you.” Everlasting means permanent. Jeremiah 31:36 makes the point in even stronger terms: “Only if the sun, moon, and stars vanish will Israel ever cease to be a nation before me.” If the stars are still shining tonight, then Israel’s covenant still stands. The New Testament affirms this truth just as clearly. Paul raises the question in Romans 11:1, “Did God reject his people?” His answer is immediate: “By no means! God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew.” Later in Romans 11:28–29 he writes, “As far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” Irrevocable means exactly what it says. No commentator, pundit, or modern voice has the authority to reverse what God Himself has declared. Jesus said in John 4:22, “Salvation is from the Jews.” That is not a side note. It is central to understanding who He is and how God’s plan unfolds. Christianity does not replace Israel. It is joined to Israel. Paul explains this in Romans 11:17–18 when he warns Gentile believers not to boast against Israel: “You, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others… do not consider yourself superior to those other branches.” The Church shares in the promises given to Israel, but those promises remain rooted in the people to whom God first gave them. Church history confirms what Scripture teaches. The early Fathers acknowledged Israel’s election. The Catholic Catechism teaches that “to the Jews belong the covenants, the law, the worship, the promises, and from them is the Christ” (CCC 839–840). Vatican II’s Nostra Aetate solemnly declared that God’s covenant with the Jewish people has never been revoked. Protestant voices like John Calvin, commenting on Romans 11, also affirmed that God did not cut off His covenant with Abraham’s descendants. So when Tucker Carlson claims the Jews are not God’s chosen people, he is not correcting elites or offering a bold insight. He is simply revealing that he does not understand basic Christianity. Tucker might want to spend less time with the Quran and more time with the Bible. So for the 100th time, here is biblical proof, historical proof both Catholic and Protestant that he is lying. On purpose. To push an agenda. One that is at odds with the Bible. To say the Jews are not God’s chosen people is not just wrong. It is a denial of what the Bible clearly teaches, and it shows a failure to understand the foundations of Christianity itself. In the Old Testament, God declares Israel’s chosenness beyond dispute. Deuteronomy 7:6 says, “The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” In Genesis 17:7, God tells Abraham, “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you.” Everlasting means permanent. Jeremiah 31:36 makes the point in even stronger terms: “Only if the sun, moon, and stars vanish will Israel ever cease to be a nation before me.” If the stars are still shining tonight, then Israel’s covenant still stands. The New Testament affirms this truth just as clearly. Paul raises the question in Romans 11:1, “Did God reject his people?” His answer is immediate: “By no means! God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew.” Later in Romans 11:28–29 he writes, “As far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” Irrevocable means exactly what it says. No commentator, pundit, or modern voice has the authority to reverse what God Himself has declared. Jesus said in John 4:22, “Salvation is from the Jews.” That is not a side note. It is central to understanding who He is and how God’s plan unfolds. Christianity does not replace Israel. It is joined to Israel. Paul explains this in Romans 11:17–18 when he warns Gentile believers not to boast against Israel: “You, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others… do not consider yourself superior to those other branches.” The Church shares in the promises given to Israel, but those promises remain rooted in the people to whom God first gave them. Church history confirms what Scripture teaches. The early Fathers acknowledged Israel’s election. The Catholic Catechism teaches that “to the Jews belong the covenants, the law, the worship, the promises, and from them is the Christ” (CCC 839–840). Vatican II’s Nostra Aetate solemnly declared that God’s covenant with the Jewish people has never been revoked. Protestant voices like John Calvin, commenting on Romans 11, also affirmed that God did not cut off His covenant with Abraham’s descendants. So when Tucker Carlson claims the Jews are not God’s chosen people, he is not correcting elites or offering a bold insight. He is simply revealing that he does not understand basic Christianity. The Bible is plain, the teaching of the apostles is plain, and the witness of the Church through history is plain. God’s covenant with Israel is everlasting, His gifts and His call are irrevocable, and Christians are grafted into that truth. As Paul put it in Romans 11:29: “God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.” Anyone who denies that is not defending the faith. They are contradicting it at its root. I upset the Orthobros on here when I posted that the Wilsons aren’t Christian. They said “how dare you declare whether or not someone is a Christian!” Here is my response (watch til the end for the most ironic part of all of this): Scripture itself tells us that it is OBVIOUS who is saved and that we can discern who is and who is not a child of God. “By this the children of God and the children of the devil are OBVIOUS: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother and sister.” 1 John 3:10 Yes, Christians will still continue to sin, as Romans 7 tell us. Sanctification is certainly messy, there’s no denying that. But someone who has been supernaturally made new by the Holy Spirit will have a real heart change. Regeneration is not an inconsequential experience. It will be obvious to people. The supernatural work of the Holy Spirit is a powerful one. Someone who is made a child of God will bear the family resemblance. No one can be born again and continue to comfortably stay in the mud with the pigs. They might occasionally still fall into the mud, they might still have dirt on their clothes even after they get up, but they will hate it when they do and will live in a humble manner before God crying “have mercy on me, a sinner.” They will pursue righteousness and have a deep deep love for others. And when they are confronted about their sin by others, they repent. So yes, we can look at someone living in a hateful unrighteous arrogant manner for years on end, even after being confronted about it, and determine that they are not of the Lord.

The wrath of God was poured out on Jesus. It was a free gift in the sense that we did nothing to deserve it, "yet while we were still sinners Christ died for us." But it was not free in that it came at great cost to Jesus, for He suffered and gave up His life to fulfill God's righteousness and wrath, so God would be just in having mercy on us. And following Christ it NOT free for us afterwards either, and this is another area I feel like the Western church never disciples people in: what it means to be a genuine Christian after converting. Paul says that "if Christ has not risen from the dead, we are of all people most to be pitied." There is great cost in this life to following Christ when Christianity isn't fake and used as a means to better pursue the idols of the American dream. “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple." Luke 14:26-30, 33 Jesus says a very similar thing in John, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him." John 12:23-26 Jesus literally says, "I'm going to go die. Now come follow me!" I genuinely do want to die as a martyr instead of growing old. Growing old, being in my sinful body decades longer and dying in a diaper sounds far worse than dying for the name of my Lord and Savior on the battlefield, which surely would please my King and store up much fruit for my eternity with Jesus. Genuine Christianity has no idols. It counts everything else as worthless compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus our Lord. And genuine Christians abhor sin. Having to walk in this world with our sinful body attached to us, like a putrid corpse of a rotting dead man tied to our backs, makes the life of the Christian a violent war zone within. Fighting my flesh brings me to tears almost daily before my Lord and I cry, "Oh wretched man that I am, who will save me from this body of death?" Not to mention fighting the powers and principalities that rule this present darkness. Surely Satan torments Christians and not objects of wrath because Satan is afraid that he only has this life to torment Christians, whereas he has eternity to torment the rest. The only hope we have is the Holy Spirit and the fact that we have living within us "all the fullness of Christ" and "The same power that raised Christ from the dead" A real fear of the Lord must be an ingredient to obedience and part of the power to overcome sin. Proverbs 14:27 The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death. Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. Psalm 25:12-14 Who is the man who fears the Lord? Him will he instruct in the way that he should choose. His soul shall abide in well-being, and his offspring shall inherit the land. The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant. Psalm 103:11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; Fear of the Lord is taught in the New Testament as well, but not much in the modern Church to our own peril. "So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace and was being built up. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied." Acts 9:31 "So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him." Acts 10:34-35 There will be no revival in the church until we start preaching the full character of God and the fear of the Lord returns. Yes God is good. Yes God is merciful. Yes God is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, but to teach that that is all that God is, is to lie about Him. For He is also righteous, just, holy, fearful, and full of wrath towards all who walk in sin. And there is no doubt in my mind teaching only the attributes of God that we think our congregations will like encourages Christians to walk in sin. The balance must return.
