Can Butterworth explain, if a few hundred Jamaicans built Britain, which country did they sail too in 1948. And why did they sail here, if it didn’t exist as a country. They were not invited in 1948 to rebuild anything. Infact they just decided to show up, to look for work and hoping there was work. And a 1949 speech given in Parliament entitled ‘Jamaica’ tells us exactly why they are here. They were invited here in 1949 onwards for services in WW2 and given also that Jamaica had a high percentage of illiteracy, illegitimacy, no jobs and no employment….. They built NOTHING. Britain wasn’t short of workers. Had Britain been short of workers, the government at that time wouldn’t have been encouraging Britons to go to work in Australia on the £10 Pom scheme.
