Hi to fellow writers. In my 2nd thriller, The Defector, a key technology for the plot is nuclear thermal rockets. They're a real thing, tested in the 1960s/70s at Jackass Flats NV, and being developed now for long distance/duration space travel. This Office of Nuclear Energy | US Department of Energy video shows how they work. I most enjoy writing when the fiction is so close to fact that it's hard to tell the difference. But it takes a LOT of work to get all the details right. Great fun. Deeply into research now for the 4th book in the Apollo Murders series.

It extrapolates the cost of Hinkley C (the most expensive nuclear power plant ever) and literally doubles it. Even the CSIRO assumes lower nuclear capital costs for Australia. 2/ '4% of the grid' This figure is also from the 'Smart' Energy Council from dividing 11GW of nuclear capacity by 300GW of renewable capacity. However, Capacity ≠ Generation. 1GW of renewable capacity generates roughly a third of the power of 1GW of nuclear capacity. 3/ 'Not ready til the 2040s' The IAEA predicts it would take 10-15 years for a new to nuclear country to have nuclear power. The is the advice the Australian Government relies on for nuclear yet is being ignored by the PM & Energy Minister. These claims must be exposed. The nuclear disinformation campaign has gone too far. I asked NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman when we'll have boots on Mars, this was his response: "SpaceX's stated priority right now is the Moon, not Mars and that changes the Mars timeline and how many people we're talking about. We can invest in nuclear power and propulsion. It's part of national space policy. It's the next giant leap—potentially the pathway with the fewest miracles required to put four people on Mars in the next 10 to 15 years. Not the Elon vision of millions in a self-sustaining city, but what NASA can do through taxpayer funding and nuclear investments, plus industry alongside it. So step one is the Moon in 2028. In parallel, we invest in nuclear power and propulsion. Hopefully that frees up resources for the next stop: Mars. Different timeframe probably that 15-year mark."

I rise to oppose the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill 2025. 👉 The government has brought the present bill to open up the civilian nuclear sector to private participation. There's speculation that the government wants to bring in 49% to 100% foreign direct investment into the sector. What strikes me as very strange is that the Adani group of companies announced its intent to participate in the civilian nuclear sector in November, and within a month, we have this bill in the House. 👉 I did not find a single clause or a single word which says anything about supplier liability. The supplier liability has been completely removed. God forbid if a nuclear accident or a nuclear incident were to take place. And since we are going to be dependent upon foreign suppliers, shouldn't the supplier be liable? 👉 There are concerns if the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board is really autonomous. Or is it an extension of the Department of Atomic Energy? If we are opening up India's nuclear energy sector to private participation, what you require is an autonomous, independent regulator who can be a neutral umpire. 👉 In matters of disposal of radioactive waste, the spent fuel—uranium and plutonium—remains toxic for thousands and thousands of years. Most countries store this in the facility itself. The Bill does not provide a robust framework as to how radioactive waste needs to be dealt with. It cannot be a function of delegated legislation, left to rules and regulations. : Listen to Manish Tewari ji as he elaborates on the shortcomings of the SHANTI Bill and urges that it be sent to a JPC for serious scrutiny, as nuclear energy is a serious matter.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 The U.S. is desperately trying to prevent Iran from rebuilding its nuclear programme while needing to get it back to the negotiating table to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The problem is that one of Iran's most important remaining nuclear facilities is believed to be buried too deep for even America's most powerful conventional bunker-buster bombs to reliably destroy. That has led some analysts to discuss a possibility that until recently would have been almost unthinkable: a U.S. tactical nuclear strike. The greatest danger wouldn't necessarily be Iran's immediate retaliation. It would be breaking an almost 80-year taboo on the use of nuclear weapons. That precedent wouldn't stay in the Middle East. Russia has repeatedly threatened nuclear escalation during the war in Ukraine but has so far stopped short of crossing that line. Part of that restraint comes from the enormous political cost of being the first country since 1945 to use a nuclear weapon in war. If the U.S crosses that line first, it's easier for others to follow. It becomes far harder for Washington and its allies to argue that Russia must never do something they have already done themselves. A tactical nuclear strike might solve one military problem in Iran.
