President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who came into office in March 2021, is expected to officially inaugurate the mammoth project before the end of the year. The project was initially scheduled for completion in July 2023, but construction was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally known as the Kigongo-Busisi Bridge, the Chinese-built mega infrastructure was renamed Magufuli Bridge in honour of the former president. The project is being developed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Group (CCECG) and China Railway. The bridge was entirely financed by the government of Tanzania through its own revenues. The People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), said construction of the bridge was completed on October 6. "As the last tank of cement was poured on Sunday, the construction of the Magufuli Bridge was completed by two Chinese companies in Tanzania's northwestern Mwanza region," the People's Daily said in an online post. The Federal Government has issued a directive for the Keffi Bridge to be opened for vehicular movement. Minister of works David Umahi gave the directive during an inspection tour of ongoing projects within the Mararaba- Keffi -Abuja road. The bridge which is now at 99% to attain completion has been under intense reconstruction in the last four months. Opening of the bridge, the Work Minister says, will ease traffic especially at this festive period.

WATCH | The Chikore community in Ward 17, Chipinge, is being praised for working together to rebuild the Nyaunhombo Bridge. Led by the Headmistress of Chikore High School, Mrs S. Mudiwa, community members have teamed up to contribute money for buying cement, bricks, and the other materials needed to complete the bridge. Thanks to this teamwork, the bridge is now almost finished, only a small section is left. The original bridge was destroyed by the heavy rains of the 2024 rainy season. JUST IN: One dead and 2 injured after a crane fell on the bridge over the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The bridge also sustained significant damage as the crane appeared to leave a sizable hole. The two vehicle drivers reportedly survived the accident however someone under the bridge was killed. "The big crane was falling down, and it looked like when it hit the bridge, it broke in part," a witness told 7News. "There is a portion of the crane near the construction site and the other one that hit the bridge bounced off the Tesla and then bounced up and hit the van."

Four spans of the bridge fell on the Moscow-Minsk railway line (traffic is delayed). The gas pipe is also damaged. The reason for the collapse is wear and tear. According to local residents, the bridge was in an emergency condition, and activists had been seeking its repair for several years. But Russia prefers spending money on war.

Back in the area where I grew up for a couple of exciting days later in the week (more of that to come…) but had the opportunity today to drive around the area to some places I remember from many years ago. I lived in Humberside (as it was called then) from 1973 to 1983 during which time we took regular trips to view the construction of The Humber Bridge which was, when completed, the longest single span suspension bridge in the world. It was amazing to see this incredible structure being built and I still marvel at the size of it today. One of the notable features is the shape of the road deck. It is very similar in design to an aircraft’s wing. The aerofoil section is designed to make the bridge stable during high winds. This design was used following lessons learned from earlier, unsuccessful designs such the Tacoma Narrows bridge. I still find it hard to believe I watched this bridge being built over 50 years ago!
