Vladimir Putin's intentions go far beyond Ukraine. Any settlement to this war that doesn't provide Ukraine with firm security guarantees or impose real costs on Putin for his aggression will only embolden him to stay in this fight.

That's why he started this war back in 2014 when he took Crimea and started an uprising that he directly supported in eastern Ukraine and what he's wanted since the full-scale invasion in February of 2022. He wants to control Ukraine, and, in fact, he wants to change the European post-Cold War security order. And as long as he's not stopped from doing that, he will continue to push. So I think what the president said, the time may be to recognize that Vladimir Putin doesn't want peace and that we need to put more pressure on him. That time, I hope, has now finally come."

We had underestimated just how bad the Russian army would prove to be in the battlefield.” - Former MI6 chief Richard Moore No, the Russian army is not weak. It is a strong adversary. Ukrainians are holding back Russia not because Russia is weak, but because for Ukrainians this war is existential. Don't underestimate Russia. Don't overestimate NATO's readiness for a modern war.
