Fourth-and-20 from his own 4-yard line. 55 seconds left. Down a touchdown in a playoff game on the road. Season over, right? Aaron Rodgers launches it 60 yards to Jeff Janis. First down. Then a penalty backs them up. Five seconds left, 41 yards to go. Rodgers rolls left,...

Goosebumps, Pete. Among the greatest series of plays against adversity I've ever seen. Hope you're recovering well, sir, and keep tellin' death to go to hell. 🫡

One of those moments where you wonder if going for two would have been better than a coin flip. I hated the old nfl OT rules.

The first throw is why Aaron Rodgers is top 3 all time for me. 60 yard dart against his body rolling left is insane. If he had the defenses, offensive weapons and coaching advantages that guys like Tom Brady and Joe Mantana did then he would have more rings.

Inside the disaster sequence by the Jets at the end of regulation: Jets could have and should have called timeout at 1:01 left and the Packers facing 4th and 5 at the +45. By doing so, the Jets force the Packers to make a decision with 1:01 left, which almost certainly would have been to punt. The average starting field position after a punt from that field position is roughly the 12 yard line. A touchback occurs ~16% of the time which would put you at the 20. For simplicity, assume the Jets have the ball from their own 12 with 51 seconds left and a timeout. One key point here is the Packers only had 2 timeouts remaining, which makes a big difference. The Jets could have run the ball on 1st down and seen what they got. If it went nowhere, they would have the ability to take the clock to 0:00 if needed because the Packers could only stop the clock twice. By not calling timeout, the Jets allowed the Packers to run the clock all the way down to 21 seconds before a delay of game. The clock decay helps one team or the other here, and in this case it clearly helps the Packers. Now comes the next clear mistake by the Jets. Once the delay of game occurred, the Jets could have and should have stopped the clock. By not electing to do so, Green Bay was able to run the clock down to 2 seconds to get a free chance at a Hail Mary. The Jets needed to stop the clock at 21 seconds to force the punt and then take it to overtime. Green Bay would not have been able to run that Hail Mary with 21 seconds. The situation was so chaotic I actually think the Packers missed an opportunity here too. Packers could have called timeout with ~8-9 seconds, tried to get the first down on 4th and 10, and if so called timeout and attempted a game winning field goal. The Packers have had a great long yardage pass offense with Love. If they failed, the Packers would have to defend one play from the ~50. Another Packers option is Trey Smack attempting a ~68 yard field goal with 2 seconds left. For some teams that would have clearly been the best option. Ultimately, this game management by the Jets was objectively incorrect in both of these instances, and the fact it sounds like they did not even talk about it on the headset is beyond alarming.

I just re-watched the entire 6:05 episode of utter clock mis-management by Aaron Glenn and the Jets at the end of reg vs. the Packers. I've clipped the most relevant 2:19 of it, where not once - even tangentially! - do the Fox announcers (Kenny Albert and Jonathan Vilma) take the necessary sledgehammer to Glenn over what he did not do! Some coaches, just won't ever get it (Glenn is one). But at least the announcers should be aware of BASIC strategy! Having stopped the Packers into a 4th and 5 at the +45 with 1:02 left, the Jets ABSOLUTELY should have "dropped anchor" on the clock with one of their TWO timeouts left. Whether the Pack punted, or went for it, EITHER WAY, you want MORE TIME no matter what. If the Pack went for it, and failed, they are in deep shit. You have just 25 yards to go and a timeout with a MINUTE LEFT for a GWFG. Even with a punt, it might be a touchback, or Isiah Williams - who took two punts back for TD's last year - might just go electric factory. After the game, Aaron Glenn decided to stand on stupid, and defended the "strategy" which allowed the Packers to both bleed out all of the clock AND get a shot at a hail mary (tho the Jets blitzed it and snuffed it, so they did ONE thing right!) Said Glenn: "I think they could have punted the ball and put us in a backed-up situation right there. So that was the reason." I mean... what? Anyhow, it amazes me that every NFL team doesn't have a dedicated "Tactics Coordinator" who can help overwhelmed coaches with this stuff. Or in the case of the Jets, maybe Aaron Glenn just doesn't listen to those nerds anyway. I know this... Aaron Glenn is also content to stare through rain soaked glasses, instead of put on a fucking hat. So I guess that kinda sums his vibe up right there.
