Francis Chan epistemology is councils over exegesis😱

The dude is actually looking at history as if God's promises are true. Exactly the same way of thinking that saved my life.

He uses a very arbitrary standard here of “for the first 1,000 years, when the church was one”. Conflict was already happening within the church during Paul’s time. There has always been conflict. Conflict didn’t switch on at 1001. The word is our divine revelation, not counsels.

It’s always instructive to see folks react to humble truth. Fruits will always reveal.

It almost sounds humble to defer to a council. And if it was merely "my opinions" v. the council, it would be. But again, Scripture itself shows that there was never consensus among those who confessed Christ. The Word alone determines orthodoxy. Study learns the original intent.

Francis Chan did not say “councils over exegesis”. Why you would you slander him like this? And you wonder why he’s heading down the path that he is on. Because of so called Christians like you who slander him over a mere 56 second clip.

It’s ironic that so many protestants claim that the Holy Spirit cannot guide the Church into all truth—contrary to what Christ explicitly stated, while giving His Church the keys of the the kingdom and the authority to “bind and loose”—but it can guide THEM into all truth. Except, there is not a single example in Scripture of Christians being commanded or told to read Scripture on their own, separate from apostolic authority, or the authority of those the Apostles had appointed as their leaders. NOT ONE. It’s the opposite: the Apostles everywhere say that Christians must be submitted to the authority of the Apostles, and the authority of those they had appointed (i.e. Titus, Timothy, etc.). As a protestant, I found this incredibly disturbing. Our model of approaching Scripture was NOWHERE in Scripture itself. I realized this long before I read a single Catholic. The Catholic claim is simply that this biblical arrangement never ended. It’s really that simple. The biblical Church required a divinely sanctioned voice to settle theological disputes (i.e. Acts 15), and the biblical Church (the Catholic Church) has required the same thing ever since.

Because God protects his church from formally teaching heresy. The Logos software update of infallibility hasn’t come out yet.

He seems to think that there was 1000 years of doctrinal perfection/unity. Already in the NT the apostles are dealing with false teaching. Chan doesn’t understand the work of the Spirit and worse than that, he wants someone to just tell him what to think.

Excellent take, we Greeks pray every day that everyone returns to the church of the first 1000 years.
