Max Levchin explains why B-players hire C-players The co-founder of PayPal and Affirm reflects on the famous Steve Jobs insight that A-players hire A-players, and B-players hire C-players: “It’s profoundly true. But there should be an asterisk explaining why this is true. And the reason for this is fear.” A-players love working with other A-players because they know it will make them better. They want other A-players who challenge them and will tell them when their work isn’t good. Most B-players are net positive too, but as Max argues, some are fearful and will say: “If I have too many B-players or A-players around, I will look terrible and it’ll be very obvious that I’m just not that good. So the way to fix this is for me to become a manager and hire a bunch of people who aren’t very good at all so that I’ll look like the tallest mushroom.” Max continues: “That is the real danger of B-players. Having people who are perfectly willing to do good work day-in and day-out is not the worst thing in the world. There’s plenty of things that A-players will turn their nose from because it’s just not that challenging. B-players are very good for that [type of work]. And a lot of B-players will over time grind their way to being A-players, so you’re investing in their future and they know it, and that’s also positive. “This generation of basketball players are by far the best” What you kids dont understand is just because players have more flashy moves and shoot better (because they PRACTICE these things much more than the past) DOESN’T mean they are better players. Players today MAY have more isolated “skill” but because this is the DUMBEST generation of players it cancels out their superior skill. This right here is a PERFECT example of this, Joel is one of the most “skilled” players in the NBA but because he lacks fundamentals and a true deep knowledge of the game he often makes elementary errors on the court. Whether that is his horrible shot selection or here guarding a point guard out of position full court which is a mistake a 2nd grade player makes! (🎥 Per Sources)

SIMPLE CUES ON DEFENSE It’s so funny, these are cues that I use with the young players that I coach and develop. So they are meant to be simple. There will be players/coaches/trainers/parents at higher levels that look at this video and think it’s dumb, or too basic. Yet when I watch bad defensive players/teams at the Pro/College/HS level … they can’t keep players in front, are late in rotations, and don’t finish possessions with rebounds. So idk, maybe this is just for youth players, or maybe it’s for everyone 🤷‍♂️

Cheryl Reeve on having to cut players in training camp (A good long quote if you have the time to listen) “I mean you try not to be transactional… realizing that you might do this everyday or every year multiple times (but) it’s their first time, and so being respectful of that and then also having the understanding that they’ve never been cut before. They are being paid to play college basketball, they were recruited heavily, they are one of the best players on their team and they just don’t experience the “hey you didn’t make this team” very often. It’s making sure they understand it’s not the end, right? Maybe it’s the time here but it’s the beginning of their professional career… the proper way of looking at it is what we focus on”

WHAT DOES ‘HE’S A DIVISION 1 PLAYER’ MEAN? The landscape of college basketball is different today than it has ever been. One of the good things within all the chaos of college basketball is that a lot of the schools will be going to 15 Scholarships. Which means practice players will most likely be getting scholarships. This is a great avenue for players that are solid, that want to D1 experience and are hoping to leverage it for academics and in to their chosen career. I do believe though that players that are capable of playing at a lower D1 level, D2 or D3 are going to get yelled in to taking one of these last scholarships and end up wasting away years of playing ability bc they place such a heavy emphasis on D1. Again, no right or wrong, just a thought.
