🚨 | Fred Vasseur on Ferrari’s debated strategy: "Honestly, I don’t think it was wrong because Mercedes’ pace was better than ours. We could be a bit above the pace for the first fifteen laps." "But over a 43-lap stint, it was hard to hold on. I also think... show more

"is that the maximum you could have hoped for?" lando: "uh no. we should have been a lot better today honestly. the pace was easily good enough for a potential podium. we just had a terrible pitstop, unlucky with the vscs. we probably should've taken the vsc, it would've been long stint on the mediums. i mean i'm gonna save more time by boxing under vsc than by going five laps longer. yeah, my life was very difficult today but the pace was very strong"

Lewis Hamilton to Sky Sports Italy: "I think all weekend I've been really, really strong. Qualifying really didn't show the true pace. I think we had a few problems through qualifying, which meant that I was further back than I should have been." "And anyways, today, of course none of us really knew what the true pace was going to be, but I felt great from the get-go and was obviously closing the gap right at the end to Charles. A couple more laps and I think I would have had Charles, so maybe one or two more laps." "So there's lots and lots of positives to take from it. We've got a lot of work to do to catch Mercedes, but it's not impossible. So a big congratulations to everyone back at the factory. I'm really, really proud of the work we've [done]. But we've still got to keep pushing, keep digging deep. I'll keep pushing into the next race." #F1 || #AustralianGP

#AustrianGP 🇦🇹 | Lewis Hamilton says he told the team it wasn’t going to be a two-stop race: “I don’t know why we were so slow today. We really struggled on pace, degradation was really really high. Much, much worse than anticipated. I mean, I thought it was gonna be like that, and I told the team. They said it was gonna be a two-stop and I was like, I don’t think it’s a two-stop today, I don’t think I’ll be able to make a two-stop work.” “Big deg in that first [stint] trying to hold on to George and… we were mostly just struggling with power.”

"I didn't really understand why we had to box so close to George's pit stop, because that really was kind of signing to finishing behind George, because with a two or three laps difference for me, wasn't much I could have done. I felt like there was a bit more in my tyres. Obviously, Lewis and I were on different strategies at that point, but I felt that what was right was staying a bit longer on track. But at the end of the day, it is the way is."

carlos on the collision that ruined his race: “up until then, we’d had a good start and a good race pace. during the 10 laps the team let me push, i was lapping in the 18s while the rest of the midfield was doing 19s, so we were having a good race for the few laps i was able to push. we had two or four points in the bag, and suddenly on that restart i had two cars behind me that looked like they were risking their lives or their racing careers on a restart in monaco with 8 laps to go, and they made it to the loews corner. yeah, the one on the inside, i think it was nico, ran me off track. unusual, because he’s so experienced and knows that in monaco at turn 6 everyone has to brake too hard because of the concertina effect. it’s very rare for someone with that much experience to be able to run you off the track in a corner like that.”

"why? just hard work from my engineers and from myself to improve me as a driver" 👏🏻👏🏻 🗣️: friday night did you think you had the car to win the race? and do you have an explanation of the difference of pace between you and oscar? lando: "no, i didn't think so. especially after fp1, i didn't. actually, andrea wanted to make a bet with me because i was pretty disappointed with the pace and how the car was handling in fp1. it got a bit better in fp2, but still the ferraris were just on another level. and i really didn't expect to get as close as we did in quali. but the wind changed from friday to saturday, and the saturday wind really suited our car a lot more. we had a lot more confidence in driving the car, so i could push more. and then i certainly felt like i could be on pole yesterday, and i felt like i could win a race today. i think today the race pace was much better than i was expecting. the degradation was much better than i was expecting too. but it was probably one of my best performances personally in terms of driving the car. the fact i can keep up with oscar on this kind of track, where it's impossible to follow, impossible to overtake, i was within eight tenths or something for 40 laps almost. the fact i could do this is what gave me confidence that i would win the race no matter what, whether he boxed early or late or whatever. the pace advantage i had was huge today. but i don't know why. the cars are identical. and i've just been feeling very, very strong lately. i've worked on many areas from last year. i feel much more confident lately with how to extract performance. and i worked a lot with my engineers to understand this car, because it's certainly not an easy car to understand and figure out on how to drive on the limit consistently. so why? just hard work from my engineers and from myself to improve me as a driver and improve my driving. and that is the answer"

“So it was a wheel shield problem. You hit the curb?” Kimi: “I hit the curb like every lap. That lap I probably hit it less even than previous laps. And I could feel instantly something broke. And I just didn't know what was going on. And also the team was trying to understand. Initially, we thought it was the front wing, but then it wasn't the front wing. Yeah, just didn't didn't go our way. And it was a shame because I think we had a real shot for the win today. It's one extra motivation to be back stronger and to do even better.”

Q: It sounds like you and the team are understanding these cars much better right now? "Yes. I think we probably surprised ourselves a bit with how well we were able to hang on. Obviously when Kimi got clean air, he was way quicker than everyone but the fact I could even keep George behind and the Ferraris. We thought the Ferraris would be incredibly strong so the fact we could keep them behind, kind of not super comfortably but comfortable enough was a positive surprise so yeah very happy!"

Q: Lewis, it looked like you were set for a good day, a great start, a great pass on Charles, ultimately the Ferrari did not seem to agree with those hard tyres. "Didn't agree with any of the tyres today, no, a very very hard race, I can tell you it was a really really tough race, one being extremely hot, so yeah I had, my start wasn't really very good to be honest, my getaway was poor but then I was on the attack, obviously got past Charles and I thought it wasn't looking too bad in the first few laps with George, I was kind of holding on for a second and then the rear just dropped off on every set, for some reason the balance was very open, very difficult and I think we, I mean on Friday we were down six tenths just in straight line speed, and I have to go and see what the case was today but I'm sure it was not insignificant, but also just grip wise we just couldn't keep up with everyone today, so a very tough one but I'm grateful for the points, the team did a great job with the strategy and with the pit stops, the boys worked so hard on the pit stops so we were proud of them and yeah, not the result we wanted but we got the points atleast." 🚨| Lewis Hamilton on the up and down weekend so far. "I think when we started off FP1 the car felt great, I was consistent, but of course there was still, there's always areas that you feel like you can improve, so we made subtle changes to try and fix those improvements and it flipped the car on its head and it was horrible through sprint qualifying and then all through the race I just had no confidence in the balance, and we made all these changes into qualifying, so I was learning a new car again, a new balance again, which I'm much happier with, but now trying to progress with it, learning it in only like six laps was a challenge, but also the Mercedes are up ahead now that we have a bit of a deficit on power, so I think tomorrow I think our race pace should be better and I think as I said the car is better (for the race)." "very hard battle with oscar at the end. you came out on top with this p4.." lando: "yeah, tough. it's a long race because you never knew what could happen later on, especially with the battling, and i think at one point i was 8-9 secs behind oscar. the second half of the race was good. the first half i was just a bit slow with everything. struggling a lot with the brakes, and it was just a tough first half but the second half was very, very strong. i managed to come back well. not the pace to do anything more, so very happy"

#F1 | Lewis Hamilton talks hot laps with Beyoncé and Jay-Z: “I never do hot laps, it’s not something I particularly enjoy. But when I heard Jay-Z was coming, I was like, ‘OK, I've got to do it.’ It was particularly Beyoncé.” “I've known them over the years, I've seen them in a few different spots, but not particularly personally known them that well. So it was really great to have the opportunity to take them around.”
