Ethan Hawke revealed he handwrites every script to memorize his lines. Sydney Sweeney: How did you prep for something like that? I mean, the immense amount of dialogue. Ethan Hawke: You really want to know? Sydney Sweeney: I’m always interested in how other people memorize everything. Ethan Hawke: Well, what I do, and I started doing this a really long time ago, is I handwrite everything like it’s my journal. When I’m memorizing, I’m not memorizing from a typewritten final draft page. I don’t want to have that in my brain, and I don’t want irrelevant stage directions to be part of it. Because sometimes scripts say, “Upset, he says: ‘Can I have a drink?’” and you can’t undo it. Sydney Sweeney: You can’t. You see it. You see it in your brain. Ethan Hawke: You see it in your brain: “Upset: Can I have a drink?” I’m like, I’m not sure. There are a lot of ways to play “upset.” It might be, “Can I have a drink?” You might even laugh on it, and that reveals something. There are all these possibilities, so you try to get rid of all that. I handwrite the whole script out. This script took forever to handwrite. Sydney Sweeney: I can imagine. Ethan Hawke: Then I do it again to see what I remember and what I don’t. Sydney Sweeney: Oh, you write it from memory? Ethan Hawke: I try to write it from memory. Then I look and see what I got wrong. That process really helps me realize, “No, it’s not that word. That word goes over here. Oh, I already used that word.” It also helps me become extremely critical of the writer, in a positive way. I can notice things like, “I’m using this same word four different times. It doesn’t seem like my character would keep using that word. Maybe this would be a better word.” You can start having those kinds of conversations. Then I try to record it with no acting. I’ll take three pages or something, try to learn them, record myself with no performance at all, then compare it to the script and see what I got wrong. Sometimes I change something that I actually like better, and then I can work that in and figure it out.

Jensen Huang on how to maintain conviction in the early days of a startup Nvidia almost failed several times in the company’s early history. Jensen is asked how he maintained conviction during the times when it looked like the company would fail, to which he responds: “You have to reason all the way back to whatever first principles you can hang on to — as far back as you can. Now once you do that, and you’ve come to the conclusion that all of the information that you have causes you to believe what you believe, you have to decide: Am I going to be somebody who does something about it? Or do I just become one of those people who says something like, ‘Oh yeah, I knew that” but you did nothing about it?” He continues: “I tend to be somebody who would reason about these things and believe it so deeply that I could see it in my head. Jensen Huang on how to maintain conviction in the early days of a startup Nvidia almost failed several times in the company’s early history. Jensen is asked how he maintained conviction during the times when it looked like the company would fail, to which he responds: “You have to reason all the way back to whatever first principles you can hang on to — as far back as you can. Now once you do that, and you’ve come to the conclusion that all of the information that you have causes you to believe what you believe, you have to decide: Am I going to be somebody who does something about it? Or do I just become one of those people who says something like, ‘Oh yeah, I knew that” but you did nothing about it?” He continues: “I tend to be somebody who would reason about these things and believe it so deeply that I could see it in my head. And once I could see it in my head, as far as I’m concerned, it might as well be real. Everything else is just details.” Jensen offers founders the following advice: “Manifest your belief as deeply as you can, and then after that, you’re hard to dissuade.” But he makes an important caveat: “Every single day, I gut-check all of the assumptions that I made and used to reason about the strategy. I’m constantly reevaluating if the assumptions or principles that I used were flawed. I’m constantly learning through failure, and I’m quick to adapt. And by adapting, you get to stay in the game . . . Oftentimes people have a hard time pivoting because they feel that their ego is somehow tied to the decision they made or something they said . . . I just wanted to say that you are not alone and millions of others have the same issues. The most remarkable thing I ever got for Christmas was a phone call just before I went into ICU. It was a simple humble an unexpected call from someone checking in. It’s why I think it’s important to remember that it’s not designer handbags, PlayStations or iPads that make this time of year. It could be a simple detour to see someone. A 10 minute chat with an old friend that means the world to them. Swallowing your pride to say sorry to someone. It’s the little things. The checking in to let someone know they are not alone. As for me I’m sad and missing Derek and Jumbo is very ill beside me as I write this but I’m also optimistic. I’ve lots of dogs to look after, I’m forcing myself to be social and have not 1 but 2 Christmas meals with friends and I love the life I have. I’m lucky and humble about that now because it wasn’t always that way. Maybe one person who needs to see this will. It’s just a time of year. If you are having it tough you are not alone. If you are doing well yourself have a little check in with somebody you know probably needs it 🙏🥰
