We pull off into the marsh and do this. No hot grease on my boat.

I like to use a pair of pliers to snap off the spike - pliers make it really quick to just 'peel' the skin off after you cut around the head too. 100% the hot oil on the boat *AND* straight from the oil into teh mouth - pucker factor and 'burned mouth by proxy' just all happened at once.
