Walsh praised some of the most violent defendants of the past year: Jakhi McCray — facing decades for allegedly torching 11 NYPD vehicles. Elias Rodriguez — charged with murdering two Israeli embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. Tarek Bazrouk — indicted for hate-crime assaults on Jewish New Yorkers. Mohamed Sabry Soliman — the Boulder firebomber who killed an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor with his Molotov attack. Rather than condemn these acts, Walsh declared: “We need to uphold these people and defend these people because they have resisted... Black America is more dependent on welfare and government jobs than any other group, so why is DSA a white college club that can’t sign them up? Blacks are 13% of the population, take 28% of SNAP, and fill 19% of federal jobs. Nonmarital births near 70% drive the poverty that keeps the dependency high. Polls give them HIGHER favorability for SOCIALISM than whites (52% to 31%) so we know the bigger checks already sell. And yet, DSA membership stays some 85% white with black numbers stuck in the single digits. And that’s because so far (1) the DSA pushes defunding the police and open borders while black neighborhoods eat the crime, and (2) it runs secular campus culture that is more urban, white, and not exactly working class. So blacks just stick with the Democratic machine that already cuts the checks. HOWEVER, when DSA candidates drop the culture war and run pure economics as they’ve done in places like DC, they win black wards the same way Democrats already lock in socially conservative Black churchgoers who take the welfare programs and ignore the rest of the socially liberal bs. That limited focus is enough for them now and it will be enough for DSA.

And who is the counterpoint? John Morgan of Morgan & Morgan, a Democratic mega-donor law-firm guy warning that socialism leads to Cuba and Venezuela. If the public face of the anti-DSA argument inside Democratic politics is a wealthy establishment Democrat telling people to trust the old Bill Clinton model while sounding like a Cold War PSA, then DSA has already won the optics fight before Ashik even opens his mouth. The worst part is that Morgan is basically right about the danger. He is just the worst possible messenger for it. If I had his ear, I would have told him to stop doing generic “socialism bad” warnings and get specific. Hit DSA on its own record. Hit them on their repeated delegations to Cuba and Venezuela, the praise for socialist regimes, the constant laundering of authoritarian politics through “solidarity,” and the new DSA platform coming this July, which I broke the news on. Saying “socialism bad” in the abstract does nothing. The argument has to be specific. DSA is bad by its own words and actions. By the delegations it sends, the regimes it flatters, the platform it passes, and the radicals it keeps elevating. Cuomo basically tees Siddique up as young and plugged into the future of the party. Morgan comes off like a dinosaur. And if he is serious about taking back his party, whoever is advising him on how to talk about DSA is doing him no favors.

Saying “socialism bad” in the abstract does nothing. The argument has to be specific. DSA is bad by its own words and actions. By the delegations it sends, the regimes it flatters, the platform it passes, and the radicals it keeps elevating. Cuomo basically tees Siddique up as young and plugged into the future of the party. Morgan comes off like a dinosaur. And if he is serious about taking back his party, whoever is advising him on how to talk about DSA is doing him no favors.
