Despite being cast as the villain, Nathan Cofnas may, ironically, be the most honest character in this entire sorry saga. In a twist few could have predicted, the academic who exposed evidence of apparent plagiarism and fabrication by Jason Arday has been suspended by Ghent University - and says he expects to be sacked. A public statement announcing “appropriate action” was signed by the university’s rector, Petra De Sutter - a man who claims to be a woman and previously joined female European politicians in a video declaring solidarity with his American “sisters” following Trump’s election. De Sutter recently apologised after using fabricated, AI-generated quotations in a university speech - and withdrew from receiving an honorary doctorate as a result. Whatever you think of Cofnas or his views, he produced evidence. That evidence raised legitimate questions. Academia really does seem to be eating itself.
