One thing I never see people mention is that, it took Qual all of a few seconds to realize the weakness of defensive magic...Dude was a monster and a genius.

The animation, pacing, and emotion in Frieren vs Qual was nothing short of masterpiece-level. Peak fantasy anime for sure.

Could it be that the reason why Fern got so good at Zoltraak was that she saw how the spell's creator wielded the spell.

The idea that his Spell was just so well made and powerful it became THE spell to study to understand how to have a defend to it. To the point it was so well studied that is was the basic attack spell.
