People always love to ask, "What are you going to do when the battery goes on your Tesla?" This 2019 Model 3 RWD owned by Eric @ Drive Protected ™ still had the ORIGINAL battery and rear motor after 381,000 miles (613,000 km). Even after all those miles, the battery retained 70% capacity. He decided to bring new life to the car by swapping the original NCA pack for a modern LFP pack from a newer Model 3. The original pack was still perfectly functional, the swap was just for performance. Swapping a battery in a Tesla is much quicker than people think. In just a few hours, the orginal battery was removed then replaced with a LFP pack. Once configured via the computer, the car is perfectly functional. There’s no huge mess, not a lot of wires, it’s actually very simple once you are experienced with it. His Model 3 now functions and charges like a newer car. Tesla vehicles are designed from the ground up to be very serviceable.

Time has taken its toll on this old lone wolf who has wandered our area by himself for the past 3 years (footage from this past winter). He looks battered and weather from an intense and rugged lifestyle. Aside from just being old, the wolf has a significant limp because he is missing his two front right toes. You can see this in the first sequence well.We don’t know how that injury happened. How a wolf in this condition survives year after year is certainly intriguing. In particular, how he keeps himself fed is fascinating because it is hard to imagine him chasing down deer by himself but possible he is capable of it. We suspect he is likely an expert scavenger, finding morsels of food here and there, but can a wolf like this persist just by scavenging all year? More specifically, is there enough food lying around on the forest floor year round for a wolf to exist solely on scavenging? Seems hard to imagine but perhaps. Anyway, many years ago, we captured this wolf on camera once or twice when he was part of a pack that lived just outside of our study area. The pack made a few forays into our area which is when we observed him. At that time, the wolf was in his prime, though he still had the distinctive largely white face, and appeared to be the breeding male of that pack. But such times would not last for this fella. And now after many years on his own, it seems this wolf likely doesn’t have many years left. "Time the conqueror", as Jackson Browne put it, has taken its toll.

Three years ago today the Notre Dame Football community lost a legend "The Voice of Notre Dame Football" (and my personal friend) Tony Roberts. In honor of the anniversary of his death today, I created this 13 min video of some of his most famous calls. Tony was the play-by-play announcer for the Fighting Irish from 1980-2006 and for myself and many others the voice of our childhoods. May you rest in eternal peace with God forever Tony. I'll see you on the other side my friend.

Our newest rescue, Arthi, is finding his footing at our Nursery. He was found all alone in the Tsavo wilderness, frightened and unsure. But this uncertain little bull who arrived in August has been replaced by a friendly, outgoing elephant who has really bonded with his Keepers. It’s the little signs that show he’s truly settled - from trumpeting for his milk, to taking the lead on walks, and joining in playful games of peekaboo. Some beautiful footage from the dam of a remote beaver pond in early spring this year. You can hear the sounds of spring all around this pond, which we call “Capsaicin Pond” (story behind that below). But this is more than just pretty footage...the footage highlights an interesting dynamic in the wolf packs in this area...because all the wolves in the video belong to different packs but they all have a history with one another. Notably, this pond is in an area of overlap between the Half-Moon and Lightfoot Pack territories. The first wolf in the video is the new breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack (now dubbed Wolf Y15C after we collared him this spring). He and his mate kicked out Wolf V094, the longstanding breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack, in Fall 2024. And Wolf V094 just so happens to be the 2nd wolf in this video, and Wolf Y15C’s mate happens to be V094’s daughter. Small world! Wolf V094 was a lone wolf at the time this video was taken but he joined the Peatlands Pack later this past summer. But you can tell he is getting to be an old fellow. And then the last wolf on camera is the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack (Wolf B3S). She recently became the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack after kicking out her mother in Fall 2024. And as it turns out, her mate is the son of Wolf V094. For a few months last winter, V094 actually traveled around with this female and his son in the Lightfoot territory but then for whatever reason, moved on. Some beautiful footage from the dam of a remote beaver pond in early spring this year. You can hear the sounds of spring all around this pond, which we call “Capsaicin Pond” (story behind that below). But this is more than just pretty footage...the footage highlights an interesting dynamic in the wolf packs in this area...because all the wolves in the video belong to different packs but they all have a history with one another. Notably, this pond is in an area of overlap between the Half-Moon and Lightfoot Pack territories. The first wolf in the video is the new breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack (now dubbed Wolf Y15C after we collared him this spring). He and his mate kicked out Wolf V094, the longstanding breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack, in Fall 2024. And Wolf V094 just so happens to be the 2nd wolf in this video, and Wolf Y15C’s mate happens to be V094’s daughter. Small world! Wolf V094 was a lone wolf at the time this video was taken but he joined the Peatlands Pack later this past summer. But you can tell he is getting to be an old fellow. And then the last wolf on camera is the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack (Wolf B3S). She recently became the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack after kicking out her mother in Fall 2024. And as it turns out, her mate is the son of Wolf V094. For a few months last winter, V094 actually traveled around with this female and his son in the Lightfoot territory but then for whatever reason, moved on. Halima Mosque update: Alhamdulillah! It's lights, camera & action! Sh Abdirashid, Imam Halima Mosque in Elwak who resigned yesterday has now rescinded his decision & will resume his leadership of the Mosque this evening. This follows a day-long discussion with the Mosque elders in which the Imam was given "unconditional & full rights to carry out his Daawah work with freedom & without any hindrance", in his own words. He will now be free from any direction regarding his work. Sense prevailed & the elders capitulated. Alhamdulillah, this is great news. The Imam has put Da'awah first. May Allah reward our brother for his steadfasness in speaking truth to power. Alhamdulillah, Allah has heard our Duas & quenched the thirst of the people hit by drought, & neglected by the Government. Today, it rained heavily in several parts of county, including Burduras, Gither in Mandera West & in several parts of Banissa, including Kiliweheri. For the remaining days of this blessed month of Ramadhan, we will give the county administration a chance to reflect on their performance & delivery of the expectations of the residents of Mandera. We thank our respected Ulamas, our youth & other leaders who spoke out for the rights of the voiceless in the county. May Allah reward you all. #Wain'dtum 'udnaa!

this is how i made the Rainbow x MOG COIN app icon. i started by gathering a few joycat references to create a version with new traits while keeping the original style — easy enough since he's literally the cat emoji we all know. from there, it was just about adding the grillz and the vipers. then i illustrated the background by hand to make it more dynamic, following joycat's silhouette and my own trippy backgrounds (but sticking to blue this time). i smoothed out the gradients, redesigned the tears to feel more stylized, and added subtle shadows so the details pop more. the final touch was turning the eyes into two rainbow logos — the cherry on top. it instantly clicked, and imo it's the detail that ties the whole collaboration together.
