Kennedy Jr. Challenges the Core Narrative on Vaccines and Public Health A chart showing the decline of infectious diseases is routinely used to claim vaccines saved hundreds of millions of lives. But what if that narrative is a scientific oversimplification promoted for profit and power? Secretary Kennedy points to a comprehensive CDC-funded study from the year 2000, conducted by CDC and Johns Hopkins researchers. Their analysis of 100 years of data concluded that nearly all the decline in infectious disease mortality happened before vaccines were introduced. The historical data reveals a clear story: - Measles: Deaths fell from ~13,000 annually to just a few hundred by 1960. The vaccine was introduced in 1963. - Pertussis & Influenza: The most dramatic mortality drops preceded widespread vaccination campaigns. - Tuberculosis & Scarlet Fever: These deaths disappeared along the same timeline, without any mass vaccination programs. So what caused the true public health revolution? Landmark studies attribute the decline not to medical interventions, but to better nutrition, superior sanitation, water chlorination, and refrigeration. These agricultural and engineering advances are credited with over 96% of the mortality reduction. The late Harvard Professor Edward Kass, a foundational figure in infectious diseases, warned in 1970 that the medical industry would attempt to claim credit for this decline to advance "profits, prestige, and influence." Vaccines can prevent infections, but an exclusive focus on the syringe has led to the neglect of therapeutics, nutrition, and lifestyle factors that build innate immunity. This distorted priority, evident in recent pandemic policy, had a steep human cost. The new direction at HHS under this administration is committed to: - A safer, modernized childhood vaccine schedule. - Gold-standard, transparent science for all medical products. - Addressing vaccine injuries and removing conflicts of interest. - Restoring scientific and medical freedom.
