![German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius: For almost four years, war has once again returned to Europe. The key to peace lies above all in Moscow. But there is no willingness there. Putin stages himself as someone who wants peace, but he is not serious. With every supposedly new attempt at peace, it is the same story all over again - like the film Groundhog Day. And while he pretends to seek peace, his actions tell a very different story. Missile and drone attacks come in ever greater numbers and with ever greater intensity. Terror against civilians escalates immediately. Our position on that [28-point] plan has been - and remains - absolutely clear: There must be no false peace. No dictated peace. No capitulation imposed on Ukraine. That would be disastrous - disastrous for Ukraine, and disastrous for Europe as well. A Ukraine defeated militarily or, even worse, pressured into defeat at the negotiating table - a humiliated Ukraine, a Ukraine internally destabilized under significant Russian influence - would pose a direct threat to Europe’s security. And that is precisely why we must not ease our support. Russia - the brutal and ruthless aggressor - must not succeed with its imperial ambitions. How must we proceed now? In my view, three points are decisive. First: Ukraine must not be forced to surrender territory. Let us be clear: this is not just about square kilometers. On that territory live millions of Ukrainians whose lives and freedom would be immediately endangered. Second: Ukraine must remain capable of defending itself in the future. This requires strong armed forces and credible, robust security guarantees - guarantees that truly protect, not the porous ones of the past thirty years. And this is why the role of the United States remains crucial. And third: until these conditions are met, we must continue our support. It is our responsibility to assist Ukraine financially, politically, and militarily - not as an end in itself and not out of altruism, but to enable Ukrainians to negotiate from a position of strength and achieve real negotiations, a real peace. These are decisive weeks for Ukraine. But they are also decisive weeks for all of us here in Europe. Ukraine’s future is closely bound up with our own - as Europeans and as Germans. If we cannot secure a lasting and just peace for Ukraine, then we will not secure our own long-term safety.
