On November 28, 1979, Flight 901 carried 257 passengers expecting champagne and views of the ice. However, a navigation error occurred the night before - the flight path coordinates were changed without telling the crew. The pilots thought they were flying over flat ice, but they were actually heading straight for Mount Erebus. A deadly optical illusion known as "sector whiteout" made the white mountain invisible against the white sky. They flew directly into the volcano at full speed.

A lot of people point to social media as a possible explanation for today’s political anger, and I’ve heard some interesting competing views on this. For a while, many argued that the main issue was echo chambers—you only see your own opinions reflected back, your views harden, and you’re not exposed to the other side. That could fuel polarization. But others suggest the opposite. Before social media, most of us already lived in echo chambers. Your friends, family, and social circles usually shared your political views. In that sense, echo chambers have always existed. What social media does is introduce you to the other side—but often to the most extreme elements. The people who post the most tend to be the most politically engaged and the most hardened in their views. This pattern shows up clearly on Twitter. About 2% of users produce 80% of the tweets. More broadly, there’s the “1% rule” of social media: 1% of users create most of the content, 9% interact with it, and the remaining 90% just watch. So when you’re online, you’re not seeing the full range of opinions on either side. You’re mostly seeing a small, highly active, and often very angry minority.
