I am a bit surprised by the reaction. It appears to be a very 'upper caste' reaction to the efforts of the SC, ST, and OBC communities to deal with issues of discrimination. So, it is certainly very disturbing. I am unable to say too much about it because the matter is still pending in court, but hopefully, the SC will deal with this issue in a rational manner. #WATCH | Delhi: On the Supreme Court ruling on the SC, ST Act, Senior Advocate D.V.S.S. Somayajulu says, "... Today the Supreme Court passed a very significant order. We do not yet have the full copy of the judgment, but I can share what we submitted to the Court. Our essential argument was that a person who has converted from an SC/ST background into Christianity cannot claim the benefits or protections of the Act... The Court was categorical: once someone converts to Christianity, caste benefits cannot apply, because Christianity does not recognise caste. The decision is also rooted in the 1950 Presidential Order, which has long been part of the statute book. The judgment clearly defines who is entitled to claim benefits under the Act and who is not. Of course, a review petition remains an option, but as of today, the matter stands settled. In this particular case, the individual was a pastor who had converted, and our submission was that he could not take advantage of SC/ST protections..."

"Every 10 years, we have a census in our country, in which every single person living in India is recorded and their details are taken down. In that, for the last 70 years, we have always asked the religion of the head of the household. We have always asked language. We have always asked caste category, SC, ST or others. The only and in the case of SC and ST, we also in the census record the exact caste that they belong to. The only thing we do not do so far is to record the caste for those who are not SC or ST. So, when we say caste census is going to take place, it means that what has always been done in the case of SC or ST will now also be done in the case of OBC and in the case of those who are neither SC, ST or OBC. So for every single household, someone would come and say, what is your language? What is your religion? What is your caste? That is what caste census means. Why is it needed? It is needed because in our country, several policies have been framed based on caste disadvantage. There are policies based on gender. There are policy based on income. #WATCH | Bhagalpur, Bihar: A Pakistani woman, who came to India in 1956, has been found to be in Bihar's voter list and was even verified in the SIR carried out in the state. When the Home Ministry started carrying out an investigation regarding foreign nationals who had overstayed their visa period, this woman was identified in Bhagalpur. Investigation has begun, and the process to remove her from the voter list has also been initiated. Booth Level Officer Farzana Khanam says, "... I received a letter from the department with her passport number, which I cross-checked. We have been asked to remove her name. Her name is Imrana Khanam... She was not in a condition to talk; she is old and unwell. As per the orders of the department, I filled out the form and began the process of removing her name. Her passport is of 1956, and she got her visa in 1958. She is from Pakistan... The next step of the investigation will be carried out by the department... I had received a notice from the Home Ministry on 11 August."

So the court has been pleased to issue notice to the respondents. Govt is expected to submit the counter affidavit and the matter is likely to be listed on August 23. The issue is that it is directly violative of the right to equality. They have been raising concerns but the govt has been deaf ear to them," says advocate for petitioner, Major (Retd) Kavish Agarwal informing about SC notice to Centre on discrimination against Nursing staff in Defence forces.
