From iOS 6 to Symbian. Pocket Shell now runs on a 2011 Nokia E7, with the same full-screen gestures and fluid animations as the iPod touch 4. This is what cross-platform JavaScript UI could feel like.

Pocket Shell is built on PocketJS, our cross-platform UI runtime for all kinds of hardware. Pocket Shell: PocketJS: Both are open source and built in public. More ambitious capabilities are on the way.

I'd support this, but its JavaScript in the end so it can't function without an underlying OS anyways, and also comes with its own set of dependency baggage, while also being slow and single-threaded (unless you've explicitly patched that in your implementation). If this was however running as the primary UI over some kind of an embedded OS (not as a Symbian/iOS application) I'd be interested.

A few clarifications: JavaScript itself is not the bottleneck here. PocketJS runs QuickJS, not a browser or Node, and it does not bring a large dependency stack with it. The JS VM is single threaded, but the system does not have to be. Rendering, I/O and other work can live on the native side. We also don’t use a browser-style event loop. Execution is host-driven around frame transactions, which is a very different model.

Didn't know about QuickJS, will read around it. However, isn't it still like a, let's say, Symbian "app" (app in the traditional sense, and not like an app execution environment like the Symbian GUI, is) and doesn't function, on let's say, hypothetically headless Symbian OS?

Yes, the current Symbian port is hosted as a normal Symbian app. But that’s just this platform backend, not an architectural requirement of PocketJS. PocketJS only needs a thin native platform layer. Remove the Symbian GUI stack and this backend would need replacing, not the runtime itself.

Yeah and thats precisely where my concern lies. No offense to your project, you're doing great, but I'd have liked to see if it could render high performance UI in a headless base OS if possible

e7 pushes 230k pixels a frame, touch 4 pushes 614k. same gestures, sure. same smoothness is 2.7x less to draw

now do windows mobile 6.0

I miss smartphones that were actually smart.

@nokia just remaks those E7 phones with updated hardware. We would love to have a phone with physical keyboard.

Man, something like this for iPod Classic would be so class

The stuff you do is quite interesting. I will follow you back

oh my god I want an E7 now

oh cool i hvae an ipod touch 4. maybe if the stuff would work id consider this

太棒了!

Is this overriding the entire launcher? (Launcher in android terms)

It’s just a standalone app with full screen gesture detection

Can it run on the blackberry q10 as an os and not an apk

I miss old Nokias!!! 😥

How much?

What are the plans for the Linux desktop environment?

iphone 4 ?

Challenge for you: Get PocketJS running on an embedded device like the ESP32 CYD
