Chip Conley (Chip Conley) is one of the most extraordinary people you'll ever meet. He was a founding member of the board of Burning Man, a board member at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, and at 26, he started a hotel called Joie de Vivre, which went on to become the second-largest boutique hotel chain in the world. After a near-death experience, he sold the hotel, and soon after, Brian Chesky recruited him to join Airbnb to help him transform the company from a fast-growing start-up into the world’s most valuable hospitality brand. At Airbnb, Chip became known as the "Modern elder" and helped Brian and the business grow in immeasurable ways. After leaving Airbnb, Chip started The Modern Elder Academy (now known as MEA)—the world's first midlife wisdom school. Chip has also written 7 books, given a popular TED talk, and is an incredible human and friend. In our conversation, we discuss: 🔸 The reality of Brian Chesky in “founder mode”—the good, bad, and stressful 🔸 How Chip went from running 52 boutique hotels to becoming Airbnb’s in-house mentor in his 50s 🔸 The “mentor and intern” mindset: how to simultaneously teach others and stay curious like a beginner 🔸 Why AI might actually favor older workers (hint: human wisdom vs. artificial intelligence) 🔸 His framework for navigating midlife transitions and finding meaning after 40 🔸 Specific tactics for older professionals to thrive in tech companies 🔸 Surprising data that midlife is often the happiest time of life—and how to leverage your 40s, 50s, and beyond 🔸 Chip’s formula for managing anxiety and fear (and how to regain control when worry strikes) Listen now 👇 • YouTube: • Spotify: • Apple: Thank you to our wonderful sponsors for supporting the podcast: 🏆 Great Question — Empower everyone to run great research: 🏆 Vanta — Automate compliance. CNN’s Dana Bash tried to claim last night was a massive security failure at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche completely flipped the script on her live on air. BASH: “The gunman was able to fire at least 5 to 8 shots when he charged through a security checkpoint outside the dinner.” “Was this a massive security failure?” BLANCHE: “Oh, to the contrary, it was a massive security success story.” “I mean, if you think about what happened as far as what we know right now, this this suspect barely breached the perimeter.” “And so when you have a perimeter of a situation like we had last night, where you had over 2000 people in a room, including the leaders of this country and many other dignitaries, you have a perimeter where you have law enforcement willing to risk their lives to keep, to keep people who don’t belong from getting in.” “This man. From what we know from video surveillance and from witnesses who were there, barely got past the perimeter, he was immediately subdued.” “And yes, he got off a couple shots. Our brave Secret Service agent who took one to the chest, although he was wearing a bulletproof vest.” “The president talked to him last night from the Oval Office. He was in great spirits.” “But no, I do not think, to the contrary, this was a security failure.” “This is law enforcement doing exactly what they trained their whole lives to do.”

While filming Dumb and Dumber in 1994, Jim Carrey checked into the most haunted hotel room in America and lasted three hours. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado was used as the filming location for the fancy hotel in Dumb and Dumber, a comedy about two spectacularly dim-witted best friends on a road trip. But horror fans would recognise the building immediately. It's the same hotel where Stephen King stayed one night in 1974, had a nightmare so vivid and terrifying that he woke up and immediately began outlining his next novel. That novel was The Shining. The room King stayed in was Room 217. The same room Carrey specifically requested during filming. According to hotel staff, Carrey went to bed and three hours later sprinted to the front desk and demanded to be moved to a different hotel entirely. Not a different room. A different hotel. For the rest of the shoot he arrived on set at the last possible second and left the moment cameras stopped rolling. He has never once spoken publicly about what happened inside that room. The hotel's tour guide at the time said simply: "What happened to him in there, we don't know. He's never spoken of it." It didn't end there. Years later, when the sequel Dumb and Dumber To was being made, Carrey approached two filmmakers and pitched them an idea. He wanted to make a secret found footage horror film, shot behind the scenes of the comedy, capturing what he described as doors swinging on their own, things breaking, and people getting hurt throughout the original shoot. The filmmakers were in. The studio said no. To this day, nobody knows what Jim Carrey saw in Room 217. And he's not telling.
