@brexit_blue ExRR engineer here who worked on the fan blades for every RR engine. The fan blades are held in place by centrifugal force once the engine starts. When wind milling like that as the engine turns each blade drops as it turns creating that noise. It’s completely normal.

It's just the card pegged to the fins to hit it so it sounds cool

All CFM-56 make that noise in the right conditions. Nothing wrong with it at all.

It's OK, someone just chucked some loose change in to tip the pilots and cabin crew.

I think this passenger forgets, the pilots and the crew are in the plane with you. They’re just as interested in safely flying as you are.

That’s normal. The fan blades are slightly loosened as part of the design and therefore it rattles when it’s at a slower speed. I understand there’s so much people who overreact over stuff like this but dude. There’s other ways to go about asking the flight attendants.

What a wanker. The noise is perfectly normal & a pilot always but always does a pre-flight walk around to check the aircraft & that happens no matter what the aircraft size or type.

LOL... I've heard that a few times myself when the wind idles the compressor on the stand. It's a little unnerving if you don't know the cause 🤣 Just remember, the pilot and co pilot are on the plane with you, and they're not suicidal (hopefully 😉).

The blades are held onto the hub using a serrated, multi-lobed base shape known as a "Christmas tree" or "fir-tree". This stepped profile spreads extreme centrifugal loads across multiple contact surfaces. These are loose at low RPM and tend to rattle.

Would be more worried if it wasn't making that noise on the walk around

Make sure you tell the pilot; they might have missed it, so they'll be glad you told them! I have the same in my job, continually being told by muppets what to do because they've spent five mins on the bog googling. 😂

The noise is quite normal - the blades only 'lock up' when the engine is running.

I had a lawnmower that sounded like that for years and still ran quite well. Not an issue to be concerned about.
