I’d always wondered why so many bands I’ve seen at the Academy didn’t have merch. Makes sense now

The 25% venue charge is awful but the 23% VAT is the law, you have to pay it no matter where you’re selling it in Ireland. If you don’t, you’re breaking the law.

Technically you need to register for Irish VAT and charge 23% VAT on the sales. There’s no minimum VAT registration threshold for a non-established US business making sales of goods in Ireland, even if it’s just a one-off concert. You should be applying VAT on the items.

This is a plague across several Dublin gig venues and needs to be stopped. It's already tough enough for artists to get over here, then to the be hit with this penalty. @peterhook @Tim_Burgess @NoelRock @foggynotions

This is so next level. So many bands complain about merch fees and maybe try to negotiate, but to open up a pop-up shop, while you are actively touring is insane. Also great PR bc it made me check out your music, can't be the only one :)
