Full interview with NASA's Moon Base Program Manager Carlos Garcia-Galan at Off World to discuss the agency's lunar roadmap. "We know that wherever we land spacecraft with jet engines that are spewing all the ejecta and regolith around, you can't be very close to that." "You can't put a... show more

Name a better job title than "Moon Base Program Manager - NASA."

impossible

Or a boring machine tunnel…

the berm idea is the detail that stuck with me. did he get into how they'd actually build one up there

So the real estate rule is just don't camp right next to the landing pad

Is it on Spotify or can we only watch it here?

Jet engines? lol

Project Artemis Phase III 2032- Seems too unambitious! A habitation module for supporting 2-4 Astronauts for surface stays of 30 days? I know that objective is focused on what NASA currently thinks an initial Mars landing mission might need, but come on now. That's not even an ISS level of NASA occupancy on the Moon. Nor is the 30 day surface stay Mars mission architecture credible anymore. NASA should aim for 3 crew that stay for 6 months on the Moon, with two crew transfers per year. Analogous to current ISS operations for permanent presence. We need long term low gravity human health data, to compare to the ISS microgravity data.

🤔🤔🤔

Are not lunar craters natural berms? Which suggests either landing inside lunar craters, or putting the lunar-surface infrastructure inside a crater. Either of which is probably easier than excavating regolith and building an artificial berm for the lander pad, in order to block lunar debris hazards which are accelerated by rocket engine exhaust plumes. A hard surfaced landing pad is probably also easier than building a debris berm.

LFG! 7-9 landings a year and that berm question gets real real quick. Slinging regolith in a vacuum with no water is gonna be a fun engineering problem

@johnkrausphotos This is cool stuff, and the best part is it’s backed at the top and WILL happen. 🤗
