WOW. 😳 Apple just quietly won the 3D maps war at WWDC. Gaussian Splatting is coming to Apple Maps Flyover this fall. Apple Maps Flyover covers 300+ cities. Until yesterday, every single one was built on standard drone photogrammetry. The technology captures photos from the air and reconstructs 3D geometry from them. Gaussian Splatting does not reconstruct geometry. It represents the scene as millions of tiny 3D ellipsoids, each one carrying its own color and opacity information based on how light actually behaves in that location. The output is not a mesh model. It is a field of light. When you move through it, it does not crumble at the edges. The detail holds because it was never geometry to begin with. Apple has been hiring for this for years. Their SHARP model, published in research last year, generates photorealistic 3D scenes from a single image in under a second. Google has more sensor data than anyone. More Street View cars, more satellites, more capture history. On navigation accuracy and geodata depth, Google Maps is still ahead by most measures. But fidelity in 3D city rendering is a different competition, and Apple just set a bar in that. Most people will experience this in the fall without knowing the name of the technology. They will open Flyover, look at a city they know, and notice it looks different. Real, not rendered. That is the moment Gaussian Splatting stops being a research term and becomes something a billion people use. Bookmark this. It will look prescient by October.

GeoLibre v2.0.0 is here! GeoLibre is a free and open-source geospatial platform that runs everywhere: as a native desktop app, in the browser, on Android, and embedded right inside Jupyter notebooks. It brings modern web mapping, cloud-native data formats, and a full processing toolbox together in one place, all built on MapLibre and with no proprietary lock-in. Our first major release adds a true 3D globe, takes mapping beyond Earth to Mars and the Moon, lets styles round-trip with QGIS, and turns loaded vector layers into editable, save-back-to-source data. What's new in v2.0.0 - Planetary mapping: explore Mars, the Moon, and other bodies with the OpenPlanetaryMap basemaps, a per-project ellipsoid, and a planet switcher right in the Layers panel. - CesiumJS 3D globe: switch any map pane to a photorealistic 3D globe that stays camera-synced with your 2D maps and mirrors the layer stack. - True 3D data: render vector layers with Z coordinates, load TIN/MultiPatch 3D shapefiles, and display KML/KMZ Collada (.dae) 3D models. - Symbology interchange: import and export vector styling as OGC SLD, QGIS QML, and Mapbox GL style JSON, so styles round-trip between GeoLibre, QGIS, and the Mapbox/MapLibre ecosystem. - Editable source layers: edit vector layers and write the changes back to their source, including GeoPackage and GeoJSON files and PostGIS database tables. - Weather and sky: a new Weather menu with live cloud and precipitation radar overlays (RainViewer), plus a Google Earth-style sun position simulation for realistic lighting. - Terrain and lighting: double-click the terrain control to set vertical exaggeration, and view any scene in true 3D relief. - Smarter data import: bring in CSV without coordinates as an attribute table, split GPX track points and route points into separate layers, and load macOS-zipped and projected-CRS shapefiles. - Raster in the browser: build normalized-difference indices for any HTTP COG and extract COG/WMS/XYZ bounding-box subsets client-side. - Field Calculator upgrades: compute geometry length and area directly on your features. - Attribute table: multi-select rows with Ctrl and Shift, plus faster navigation. - Google Earth-style extras: "View in Google Maps / Google Earth" actions, camera-reset keyboard shortcuts, and a UTM easting/northing grid mode for the Gridlines overlay. - New plugins: a Mapillary coverage and street-level image viewer, a Historical Imagery panel, and an Elevation Profile tool. - Fully localized: all 13 language catalogs are complete, so the entire UI is translatable. A GUY AT GOOGLE DEEPMIND MADE AN ISOMETRIC PIXEL-ART MAP OF NEW YORK CITY AND PUT IT ON THE OPEN WEB FOR FREE it's called you open the tab and the city is just sitting there in classic SimCity 2000 isometric pixel art. you scroll. and it keeps going. and going. i zoomed in on midtown and i could read the H&M signage in times square. in red. as actual pixel-art letters on the side of a building. i could see the crystalline spire of the Bank of America Tower poking out of a clump of skyscrapers. individual rooftop HVAC units. tiny green roof gardens. the little driveway loops in front of the hotels. he estimates the map needs roughly 40,000 tiles. nothing is a placeholder. the guy who made it is Andy Coenen, a senior staff engineer at Google DeepMind. he is not a pixel artist. by his own admission he is "a former electronic musician." what he actually did is kind of insane: > pulled NYC's geometry from the Google Maps 3D tiles API > fine-tuned an open-source image model (Qwen-Image-Edit) on ~40 hand-paired examples of "satellite tile → pixel art tile" > spun up 50 parallel instances on rented GPUs and generated tens of thousands of tiles in a few hours > the fine-tune cost him 12 bucks his own stated mission for the project, verbatim, is one sentence: "what's possible now that was impossible before?" apparently the answer is "one engineer can pixel-art most of a metropolis for the price of a sandwich." and the wildest part to me is he didn't sell it. no signup. no paywall. no NFT. you open the URL and the city is yours to wander. the post landed at 1,325 points on Hacker News and topped bestofshowhn's 2026 list. we live in a timeline where a senior engineer at one of the largest AI labs on earth spent his nights pixel-arting Manhattan for fun and then gave it away. the internet is healing.

DIGITAL TWIN UPDATE: The Unreal Engine digital twin project is CANCELLED! WE ARE OPEN SOURCING THE WORK!!!!!!! Instead, I'm building an end-to-end land management platform I'm calling Mazzap because it's an app and it's a map and also I'm Mr. Mazza. I'm also not calling a digital twin anymore; I'm calling it a V.E.I.L. which stands for Virtually Embodied Intelligent Land which serves the dual purpose of sounding way cooler and also conveys the long-term aims of the prject way better. With Mazzap anyone can easily generate a veil with nothing but publicly available data (and some photogrammetry objects if you so choose). Everything is perfectly georefrenced and you can right-click anywhere on your veil to get coordinates you can plug into google maps yourself. The next step for this is going to be building a survey companion mobile app so you can get field data yourself complete with attribute tables to drop in to get even HIGHER fidelity data than USGS. My stretch goal is using something like SAM 3D (but better) to generate georefrenced 3d tree assets based on the real trees on your land (which will eventually lead to growth and fruiting simulators based on your soil and hydrology data). Then again maybe that's not the next step; maybe the next step is plumbing in IoT devices so you can view assets in real time on your land. GPS trackers on the sheep, or maybe data from your solar controller. Or maybe it's up to you, because it's completely open source and it has an agents markdown file ready for your own coding agent to read and adapt for your purposes (did I mention this is vibecloded slop? sowwyyyy) Watch demo below and see how you can go from zero to beautifully rendered 3d map of your property in less than 15 minutes! If you're coming in cold to all this, below in the QT is a nested thread of reverse chronological tweets of my work on this (in unreal) so far.

Anthropic's most viral feature is now open-source! Until now, Anthropic's Generative UI capabilities only existed inside its own products. CopilotKit🪁 just shipped Open Generative UI, an open-source implementation of Claude Artifacts that works in any app. The agent generates HTML/SVG at runtime, and CopilotKit streams it token-by-token into a sandboxed iframe inside the app's chat. So the user can watch the UI assemble itself in real time, not after the full response is ready. The sandbox is fully isolated with no access to the parent app, the DOM, or user data. So if the agent hallucinates broken markup or unexpected JavaScript, nothing leaks outside the iframe. Under the hood, the agent does not select from pre-built components. Instead, it generates arbitrary visuals from scratch every time. The output is unconstrained by default, but you can shape it by defining prompt-based skills that teach the agent specific visual formats or guidelines. For instance, a skill prompt can guide the agent toward producing a Chart.js dashboard with proper axis labels and responsive sizing, or an interactive 3D model with rotation controls. The video below shows this in action, and the output quality you see actually comes from the skills layer. Open Generative UI runs on AG-UI, so it works out of the box with LangGraph, CrewAI, Mastra, Google ADK, AWS Strands, and more. It also ships with a standalone MCP server that plugs into Claude Code, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible client. And the entire stack is built on top of CopilotKit, the open-source frontend framework for agents and generative UI. 30k+ GitHub stars, with SDKs for React, Next.js, Angular, and Vue. I have shared the GitHub repo and a live playground in the replies!

Big news from OVER! 🚀 We're expanding our Visual Positioning System (VPS) globally integrating open datasets from Mapillary & Panoramax. Precise AR re-localization everywhere. Yes, EVERYWHERE! 🗺️ Mapillary & panoramax offer over 2 BILLION geolocalized images under CC-BY-SA license. Mapillary (recently acquired by Meta) covers the globe, while Panoramax specializes in France. These datasets beautifully complement OVER's community-driven OVRMaps. While they're less dense (about 1-2 orders sparser), their scale is massive. Check out Mapillary’s global coverage here: But leveraging such sparse, varied data isn't easy—think limited overlap, camera distortion, and no metric scaling. Yet, we've cracked the code! 💡 Our recent breakthroughs combining our VPS pipeline with cutting-edge Large Geospatial Models (LGMs) allow us to build accurate 3D digital twins and offer reliable VPS services using these sparse datasets. 📍 Accuracy might be lower than our detailed community maps, but it still blows GPS out of the water! This is HUGE for OVER. It means we’re extending our coverage WAY beyond the 110,000+ locations already mapped by our community. Web3 DePIN + Open Source beats Web2 giants like Niantic! And that's not all—we're also unlocking exciting new possibilities soon: 1️⃣ Faster and easier mapping through our Map2Earn program using 360-degree camera integration. 2️⃣ Integrating datasets from new DePIN partners—like our recent partnership with NATIX Network the OVER ecosystem. Stay tuned! The future of AR Spatial Computing and decentralized mapping is here, and it's open, collaborative, and unstoppable!
