i always wonder how people figure things out like this in the first place, the moment i try to experiment with new layered settings it turns into dogshit so i just revert back to the usual gradient layer and blending modes that work

It just takes experience! Once you know what different settings and modes *really* do and how they affect things it's easier to guess some outcomes. Also lots of observing other creatives and picking up on their workflows and tips!

I love love love this trick, been using it for YEARS. Sometimes instead of changing the layer mode I mess with the color balance to give it a nice colored tint. It’s so good.
