Zimbabwe's internet price and capacity can be solved by tomorrow with enough will from the Ministry of ICT, ISPs, and Potraz. Google, Meta, YouTube, and Netflix want the end users to have the best internet; in fact they want everyone to be connected to High Speed Internet. That is why Google Equiano ran a cable from the EU to Nigeria, Namibia, and South Africa with the goal of making the internet cheaper. Zimbabwe does not have an internet problem because peering is FREE in Johannesburg, local pricing is artificially priced high because of "Maintenance Costs" Unfortunately, its alot harder to ran cable inland, its alot easier to ran the cable in the ocean because there is less regulation. If Zimbabwe can partner with Meta, Google, Huawei, Microsoft, and many other players for inland fibre, it will take less than a few months for us to have the best internet and over-the-top service. The biggest challenge is the Regulators and Gatekeepers.

According to the wayleaf signed, the developer is not allowed to use a TLB (excavator) to dig as this is going to damage various cables. The agreement is that digging is to be done by manual labour. The first time this cable was damaged, operators managed to backfeed supply but this is now not possible. Last week, the same cable was damaged and it took four days to resolve the outage. While we understand that the community needs services and accommodation, we appeal to the councilors and community leaders to address this concern with the developer. Our team will work swiftly to restore supply but we need you, our valued customers to help us safeguard our electricity infrastructure. Please note that the 33kV cable is unique and has to be ordered. As a result of this, there is no estimated time for restoration. ^TM

From Dan Lorenc on the malware attack that almost took down the entire internet last year: “There’s a popular compression library that’s used in almost every piece of software. And it had been maintained by one person in his spare time for the last 20 years. And then a couple years ago, somebody just decided to start helping him. They jumped in, fixed a bunch of bugs, and did a lot of great work. And then that first person got tired of working on it. So he handed the whole project over to this other person. It turned out that other person was just a pseudonym and was not a real person. And within six months of getting control of the project, they had put in a carefully orchestrated set of malware that was really hard to detect and no one noticed. And because it was so widely used, the exploit would've basically given that person remote access to any computer running that piece of software, which was basically everything connected to the Internet. But because it was open source and the code was transparent, some random engineer just happened to be running some benchmarks on a weekend. And he noticed that program was a little bit slower than it used to be, and that it was making a weird cryptographic operation to check something. And right before this thing got widely deployed across every device, he dug in, and discovered that there was a backdoor put in. This was the closest thing to a full-blown internet crisis that we’ve ever had. And they still have no idea who did it. It was just an anonymous email account. No one ever traced it back to an individual. And that's the long game. This person spent years just doing good work and earning the communities trust.”

Some hackers got together and made a charging cable for your phone. It’s called the OM.G cable. Just picking up and looking at it, you wouldn’t be able to tell, nor would most people even suspect that cable can hack your phone. Once it’s plugged in, it shows up on the other users device as a WiFi hotspot, they connect to it and instantly have control over the device the cable is plugged into. Although it’s used for ethical means to detect vulnerabilities in software for phones. People are buying them and leaving them around places like airports waiting for someone to take it and use it. The data cable was damaged today, and the anchor chain of the vessel was hanging in the water. The vessel, Fitburg, was going from St Petersburg, Russia to Haifa, Israel. It is flagged in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Fitburg is not on any official sanctions lists but has been highlighted as a vessel of interest by a sanctions monitoring platform. Fitburg was intercepted in Finland's exclusive economic zone, and the cable damage took place in Estonia's economic zone. 14 crew members were detained.

As much as 99% of global internet communications rely on a series of undersea cables that are incredibly vulnerable to sabotage—as China has shown us—and earlier this year China unveiled a special tool that can cut even the deepest undersea cables. That’s why Ganley is working on something called the Outernet, a constellation of 600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites that would make up the world’s first self-contained communications network - and that would be way less vulnerable to attacks. Unlike traditional satellite networks that route data back to Earth repeatedly, the satellites are interlinked by high-speed lasers and advanced onboard routers, making it possible for data to travel directly through space, touching the Earth only at the start and the final destination. Telecom companies invested $500 billion into fiber optic cable between 1996 and 2001. Most of it financed with debt. The growth in capacity outstripped demand by orders of magnitude. By 2005, 85% of the fiber they laid was still dark. Unused. The companies that built it went bankrupt. WorldCom. Global Crossing. 360networks. Exposed as fraud, overleveraged, or both. $2 trillion in telecom stock value evaporated. The cable stayed in the ground. 80.2 million miles of fiber, representing 76% of all digital wiring in the United States at that point, survived every bankruptcy filing and liquidation sale. The glass in the ground didn't care who owned the company above it. Amazon launched Prime Video on that fiber. Netflix streamed its first original on it. Google built YouTube on bandwidth that cost 90% less than it would have before the crash because dead companies had already paid for the capacity. Every cloud platform, every streaming service, every video call you've taken in the last decade runs on infrastructure that bankrupt telecom companies subsidized with investor money they never returned. Now look at 2026. Big Tech is spending $400 billion on data centers this year alone. Amazon's capex plan is $200 billion, the largest in corporate history. The AI bubble, by one estimate, is 17 times the size of the dot-com bubble. Bezos himself called it an "industrial bubble" at Italian Tech Week. Here's why he's calm about it. He watched the exact same movie in 2001. Amazon nearly died in that crash. Stock dropped 90%. But when the dust settled, Bezos had cheap bandwidth, empty data centers looking for tenants, and a trained workforce of engineers that the dead dot-coms had paid to train. AWS was built on the rubble. The pattern is specific. Investors fund infrastructure. Companies die. Infrastructure survives. The next generation builds on it at a fraction of the original cost. Data centers don't disappear when an AI startup folds. Chips depreciate, but the buildings, the power connections, the cooling systems, the land with energy contracts attached to it: all of that persists. When AI companies fail, they'll leave behind computing capacity that someone else will rent for pennies on the dollar. Bezos is making a $200 billion bet with full awareness that much of the industry around him will collapse. He's seen this before. The last time the bubble popped, it handed him the raw materials to build a $2 trillion company. The investors who funded the fiber never saw a return. The company that inherited it became the most valuable on earth.

Now look at 2026. Big Tech is spending $400 billion on data centers this year alone. Amazon's capex plan is $200 billion, the largest in corporate history. The AI bubble, by one estimate, is 17 times the size of the dot-com bubble. Bezos himself called it an "industrial bubble" at Italian Tech Week. Here's why he's calm about it. He watched the exact same movie in 2001. Amazon nearly died in that crash. Stock dropped 90%. But when the dust settled, Bezos had cheap bandwidth, empty data centers looking for tenants, and a trained workforce of engineers that the dead dot-coms had paid to train. AWS was built on the rubble. The pattern is specific. Investors fund infrastructure. Companies die. Infrastructure survives. The next generation builds on it at a fraction of the original cost. Data centers don't disappear when an AI startup folds. Chips depreciate, but the buildings, the power connections, the cooling systems, the land with energy contracts attached to it: all of that persists. When AI companies fail, they'll leave behind computing capacity that someone else will rent for pennies on the dollar. Bezos is making a $200 billion bet with full awareness that much of the industry around him will collapse. He's seen this before. The last time the bubble popped, it handed him the raw materials to build a $2 trillion company. The investors who funded the fiber never saw a return. The company that inherited it became the most valuable on earth.
