This is different then the use of thou or thee; this is not a change in linguistics, it is a change of definition. They is the plural form, for more than one person. If a person insists that they are more than one person, that is Dissociative Identity Disorder. If someone is really offended that I will not use "they" I just use their name. It is a clunky way of speaking, but it is at least correct.

@JohnHMcWhorter Why not "it" instead of "they"? "It" is also used as a singular for an animal - but an animals is not a thing. ;-) So don't say, because it is a pronoun for a thing.😉
