Galaxies merging 🌌 A supercomputer simulation shows many galaxies merging over time. The parts of galaxies we can see are glowing stars forming from gas in their central parts. Visualizations like these inform researchers on a galaxy’s evolution and how gas within one may form.

Hi, I'm curious about some data of this simulation. What is the time-frame of this simulation? 100 million years? How big is the formed galaxy in this simulation? Something the size of our Milky way (100,000 lightyears)? What are the velocities we can observe in the animation? How much (processor) time did it take to calculate this evolution?

The Formation and Evolution of Galaxies 🌌 All matter in the Universe was created approximately 13.8 billion years ago during the Big Bang💥 Initially, all matter was compressed into a very small ball of infinite density and immense temperature, called a singularity. Suddenly, the singularity began to expand. This is how the Universe began. After rapid expansion and cooling, all matter was almost uniformly distributed. Over the course of several billion years, denser regions of the Universe began to gravitationally attract each other. This caused them to become denser, forming gas clouds and large clumps of matter. Clouds of hydrogen gas within protogalaxies underwent gravitational collapse to become the first stars. Most of these early objects were tiny dwarf galaxies, but some took on the familiar spiral shape, similar to the Milky Way.
