The Genesis game was a major visual downgrade - but still managed a great soundtrack in some ways rivaling the original:

Galaxy Force II for arcade (Sega/1988). Another AM2 technical marvel in its original arcade form, with smooth sprite-scaling and dynamic music. Basically After Burner in space, with different planets and sci-fi tropes. None of the home ports back then were able to hold a candle, and the arcade also had a deluxe cabinet, which physically tilts and rotates to match your flight on-screen.
