A couple sound bites that stood out to me from Jack Gohlke after Oakland beat Kentucky last night… 1. He puts his phone away 2 hours before the game and doesn’t check it for a while after the game either. This should be a non-negotiable for ALL athletes and something they all should implement into their pre-game and post-game routines. Nothing leads to more mental fatigue, and zaps energy and being in the moment as much as the phone. 2. True belief in yourself and your team is a POWERFUL thing. When you know deep down that you don’t just belong on the same court/field as others, but that you are the best player on it, magic happens.

THIS WEEKEND, IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU. IT’S ABOUT THEM. Memorial Day isn’t a day of sadness—It’s a day of honor. It’s a day to pay respect to the men and women who gave everything. Not just for a flag. Not for glory. But for the person to their left and their right. For this country—for something greater than themselves. We get to live with the benefits of their sacrifice. The freedoms. The opportunities. The respect that the uniform still commands. But make no mistake—we didn’t earn that. THEY did. Say their names. Say them proud. Say them with honor. Say them with respect. As bad as it hurts, it’s what THEY would want. If any of us gave our lives for this country wouldn’t want a single tear, a single moment of sadness. We’d want the world to know: we died with honor and dignity, for something greater than ourselves. And don’t you dare tell others to honor them, to respect them, or to live a life worthy of their sacrifice—if you’re not doing the same. Don’t post for attention. Don’t make it about your feelings. Don’t turn it into a day about you. Make it about them. Live in a way that’s worthy of what they gave up. Make this weekend an act of honor. Because they gave their tomorrows for our todays. Sometimes, a coach loses a game, much less a regional final, and they're ready to hit the showers, hit the road, and not talk much. It was refreshing to see Louisiana's Head Coach Matt Deggs, who'd just lost 19-5 to Mississippi State, after playing in mid 90s temps earlier in the afternoon just to get the opportunity, willing to talk about the game, his team, and even his expectations for next year. If you're fans of Mississippi State and its Head Coach Brian O' Connor, he will remind you of the same candor, plain-spoken-but-well-spoken type of coach who has both affection for his players but expectations of what he asks and demands of them. This is a coach whose team survived multiple elimination games at the Sun Belt tournament, played at all hours and even multiple locations last week, winding up in the championship game. And when offered a chance to deflect the lopsided score with the drain his team might have faced having only a short while after gutting out a win over 2-seed Cincinnati 8-6, he said his team wasn't tired, though. They just ran out of pitching. And, his analogy that "they were going to have to kill us, and they did" was a tip of the cap to his opponent, whom he deemed worthy of a long run in Omaha. Anyway, let's let Coach Deggs say that, and so much more, in his own words. Write it down now, they look like a team to watch in the Sun Belt for 2027.
