What about enemies of light and darkness in either space, could be alternate realities/ texturing in each space.

Cool idea, and very much possible. You have things that only appear in either light or shade, but not both.

Makes me think of the Splinter Cell gameplay where in the shadows you were effectively invisible.

In early editions of Dungeons & Dragons, the thief class was described as having the (unique) ability to "hide in shadows."

Cool! I worked on a game that had a similar idea but I concluded that it couldn't be properly done without a concept of volumetric shadow which was too much of a hassle to implement.
