Ontario's schools need more adults. We need more EAs and more educators in our schools to keep students safe and help them learn. Children in Grade 6 were in Kindergarten when the Ford government took office. EQAO scores are on their watch, and this government is failing our kids. That is why Ontario-Liberals are calling on the Ford government to invest $1 billion in new education funding so boards can hire the staff students rely on every day. Students should not have to pay the price for underfunding. It is time to give them the support they deserve.

The numbers are mind-blowing. 🔴 Douglass was originally built for 888 students in the Austin neighborhood, where Johnson lives. 🔴 Just 35 students attend Douglass today, meaning the school is 96% empty. Of those 35 students, 64% were chronically absent last year. 🔴 The new CPS budget expands Douglass staff from 23 to 32 employees (1.09 students per employee). 🔴 The school already spends more than $68,000 per student per year (excluding capital outlay and debt service). That’s enough money to send every Douglass student to one of the most elite private high schools in the country while saving extra money for college tuition. 🔴 Student achievement data has been redacted for Douglass, most likely due to too few student records. When meritorious students are unable to secure admission in the medical field while undeserving candidates become doctors, India's healthcare system is bound to suffer. And bad teachers rarely face real consequences thanks to tenure and union protection. The “customers” (parents and kids) have almost no exit. Real per-pupil spending has nearly tripled since 1970 after inflation. NAEP scores flat or eroding in core skills for decades. PISA rankings middling at best, with math especially weak. Thomas Sowell diagnosed this in Inside American Education, asserting that the system is morally and intellectually bankrupt. It has turned into a propaganda operation more than an educator primarily pushing ideology, feelings, and self-esteem over knowledge and competence. With endless public money and zero market test, there is nothing forcing correction. Unions buy political protection so the failure machine keeps running. Friedman and Sowell both identified the same disease and the same cure, namely real competition and choice. Vouchers or education savings accounts let parents take the money and flee failure. Good schools grow, while bad ones finally face losses and must improve or die. Without the discipline of losses, mediocrity is subsidized forever. As mayor, even though I don’t oversee our school district, I’m deeply committed to making sure our kids get a world-class education—with safe public schools where kids can learn and educators are well supported. I have been in regular contact with both the school district and the teachers union, and I am urging them to keep talking so kids can keep learning. Our working parents can’t afford to stay home if schools are closed. Our special needs students can’t afford to lose access to vital services that help them succeed. Schools are the foundation that makes daily life possible and helps every family in San Francisco thrive. I am also actively working with city departments to ensure we have options for our students in the event that classrooms do close. But I want to make one thing clear—what is best for our students is for the adults to continue discussions at the table so we can keep kids in the classroom. I will continue pushing for solutions that keep our schools open and our students learning. San Francisco’s families deserve nothing less.
