A convenience store employee in La Grande, Oregon, was caught after stealing a $25,000 winning lottery ticket during an undercover sting operation conducted by Oregon State Police (OSP) and the Oregon Lottery in September 2024. OSP lottery detectives acting as customers presented a winning $25,000 ticket to the clerk at the Short Stop convenience store. The employee scanned the tickets, told the undercover detectives that none were winners, and kept the winning ticket, according to officials. A week later, the employee mailed the winning ticket and a signed "Winner Declaration" form to the Oregon Lottery in an attempt to claim the $25,000 prize. The employee was cited for aggravated theft in the first degree and computer crime. Additionally, OSP recommended charges of theft by deception and forgery in the first degree to the Marion County District Attorney's Office. A lottery representative stated that it's rare for this to happen. If you can't scan your lotto ticket yourself, ask to keep the non-winner so that you can look it up on yours states lotto page.
