Only in California. LAUSD is quietly borrowing ANOTHER $250 million to settle m*lestation claims against teachers. That’s on top of $500 million issued less than a year ago—pushing the total past $1 billion in claims. The district admits it is settling cases it is “not able to successfully defend.” And the local taxpayers are the ones who have to foot the bill. Here’s the worst part: According to Adam Carolla, the teachers’ union is so powerful that the board can’t even fire the offenders. So taxpayers are left stuck with teachers accused of m*lesting children. Look, I know I'm harping on this a lot today, but I can't stop thinking about Occam's Razor here: Why are we not seriously considering that the reason we allegedly have mystery craft that defy the laws of physics but do not have physicists because "the one type of person who could possibly help with this" IS EXACTLY WHO THEY DON'T WANT? Imagine for a moment that they have a crime scene that they are assigning unqualified personnel to. Why would you do that? Because you're trying not to solve the the crime, only to make it LOOK like you are. Why would you not try to solve a crime? Because you already know who did it. But you go through the motions because you don't want anyone to know you know. That raises other questions, of course, like, "did they already solve it a long time ago?" or "did they not need to solve it because they were told how it works by whoever made it?" Maybe I'm wrong. But it feels like the one answer that might answer the question, "Why not do the most obvious thing?"

Mathlib is Lean library that has formalized a lot of humanity's math concepts and proofs. Grant speculated about a really interesting possibility: You could just have different AIs fork MathLib and build their own parallel math civilization. Lean guarantees that whatever new conjectures they come up with would be logically valid. Whether they'd be interesting is another matter. But as AIs develop better and better taste, why wouldn't they be? "That's a very unique thing that math has that nothing else has, where you could press go and just pour compute at it, look away for ten years, and then come back and say, 'What do you have? There's going to be something." I love this as a metaphor for what's going to happen to our civilization overall. For millennia, humanity has built this corpus of knowledge that is now being distilled into these models. At some point, the models will just extend that arbitrarily.
