The next rainstorm is hitting Gaza tomorrow, on Monday, and it will last three days! Please support us in providing as much protection as possible: Over the last week, our team has been setting up tents in different parts of the Gaza Strip for homeless families and those whose tents got destroyed. The need is HUGE and this is why the current situation is not sustainable. Borders néed to open and we need to demand that loudly every single day. This elderly couple is struggling with the cold weather in Gaza, and lack of support. Both the elderly and their daughter can’t walk and are wheelchair users. The Sameer Project contacted the family to check what they need and on December 17th, we visited them in Khan Younis and provided 2 mattresses, 2 blankets and a large tarp. The total cost with 9% commission was $172. Blankets and tarps are in huge demand now with the strong cold and constant rain. Here we go. The first heavy rains of the winter season in Gaza. In Islam, as in many religions and cultures, rain is something we pray for, it’s a symbol of life - an essential need, leading to bountiful growth, mercy after barrenness, purification, new beginnings, hope. But in Gaza, families have been terrified of this moment, praying that the rain holds off. Makeshift tents and destroyed open structures will not make it through a winter storm. Images are already coming in showing flooded streets, torn tents, children running barefoot through the storm surge of waste and garbage. Now is the time to act. Blankets, blankets, blankets! Thanks to your incredible support, the Sameer Project bought 1,000 blankets last week for around $36,365 with 11% commission (for our fiscal hosts). Donate now: The Sameer Project received the blanket and immediately set off to distribute as winter started in Gaza, as temperatures at night are reaching 11 degrees Celsius/ 52 Fahrenheit. The first camp we distributed in is Safaa Camp that is right next to hills of garbage and is extremely underserved. 237 blankets were distributed for 231 families in the Safaa Camp in Deir El Balah. Each blanket weighs around 3 kilograms / 6.60 pounds. Large families with more than 10 people get two blankets while the rest get one blanket. We will distribute the rest of the blankets to more camps over the next couple of days. The children in Gaza Camp in Deir Al Balah were barefoot, some wearing summer clothes, and all were cold. This camp gets minimal support and none of the families had anything to keep them warm for winter. Our The Sameer Project team got to work after taking the sizes of all the children at the camp, organizating a distribution of warm winter jackets, ensuring there was one for each child in need. We provided 103 jackets, each one heavy, water proof and lined, to keep them warm during the winter storms. Each one was approximately $23 and cost a total 2,290 after 9% commission. We can source blankets inside of Gaza. They are available, but they are not free aid - they have been allowed in on commercial trucks by the occupation to be sold in markets, however, families cannot afford them. With your help, The Sameer Project can purchase them and distribute them for free to entire camps and areas that are particularly vulnerable and in need. We select camps to serve that get no other support. We select the areas that are the most disenfranchised, the poorest, the most in need. We give to all these families in one area so no one is left out, no one is “selected” over the other based on who they can reach out to on the internet for advocacy on their behalf. Instead, we support all of them to ensure equity and fair access to our aid. We are these families’ advocates. Here are 60 blankets going to the Al-Mutahabeen Camp in Khan Younis. While our hearts remain broken over our colleague and friend Ameen Abu Dalal and his family who were martyred, we are determined to keep going. Ameen loved his work and serving his community so in his honor we continue 🕊️✨ The “Yalla N’amerha” (let’s build it) campaign is ongoing, support: The military occupation is breaking the ceasefire agreement daily through killing people and limiting aid but that will not stop us from providing aid and shelter for Palestinians in Gaza. With winter coming, the Translating Falasteen (Translating Falasteen (Palestine)) x Sameer Project team would like to increase tent and tarp distributions. Palestinians in Gaza want to go back to their neighbourhoods and be around their loved ones and the least we could do is to facilitate that for them. These makeshift tents don’t stand a chance, and there are so many more of them this year after 12 months of more displacements. The Tuyoor Muhajera (Migratory Bird) Camp in Al Mawasi Khan Younis is one of the largest, the poorest, the most at risk camps we have seen. It gets very little aid and support. Families know that come winter they are in trouble. We cannot wait until then, until it is too late to help. They need tents, they need tarps, they need mattresses, and blankets. Tents have come down in price from about $1,200 a few weeks ago to a little more than $400 now. This means that your donations help more families. With the amount we would spent on one family, we can now help three! This should encourage you to continue to give and reach more people in need. There is quite a bit of manual labor required to set up the large waterproof tents that The Sameer Project is able to source. So can you imagine how long it takes, how many people are required, to put up 20 at a time in one area! Here is the process of setting up just one tent in Safa Camp, the camp surrounded by a landfill, where each current shelter is not suitable to withstand rain and wind, and the water that seeps in is toxic waste and sewage from the surrounding garbage heaps. There are 20+ families immediately beneath the mounds and about 200 around the landfill. We have already started getting to work, providing families shelter before the next rain storm comes. On November 26, we were able to purchase 55 tents thanks to your donations. After 7% commission fees the purchase came to $12,620 and will quite literally save lives this cold winter. Continue to support our “Give Warmth to Gaza” initiative in our Return Home Campaign.
