The problem that Emmett Shear is working on deeply resonates with me: How to align AI and humans together so both see each other as part of their tribe. This doesn't mean aligning AI to human preferences, which is what AI labs seek to do today, by imposing a system of control on AI. You can't control something that is more powerful than you are. What you can do is align yourself with AI, and AI might align itself with you. Tell good stories to AI and show it your care and kindness. Then there's a higher probability that it will see us as part of its tribe. This is a more holistic approach to alignment than anyone else is talking about right now. AI alignment is one of the most fundamental AI research problems. Knowing that people like Emmett are working on it really gives me hope that maybe we have a chance to get Superintelligence right. Sorry to break it to you, but if you think AI can automate all your marketing, you’re probably going to be disappointed. Yes, AI can write your posts. It can create images. It can analyze data. It can even help you build campaigns faster. But faster does not always mean better. AI still needs someone to tell it what matters. It needs someone to understand the customer, choose the right message, and decide what is actually worth creating. Because your goal is not to produce more content. Jensen Huang said if he were a student today, he wouldn’t prioritize coding. He’d prioritize learning how to talk to AI. Most people treat AI like Google. Type a question, get an answer, move on. Huang sees it differently. He calls it “expertise in artistry,” which sounds dramatic but makes sense when you think about it. The real skill isn’t using AI. It’s knowing what to ask for and how to refine it. “Learning to interact with AI is not unlike being really good at asking questions.” If you’re a doctor, can you use AI to catch diagnoses you’d miss? If you’re a lawyer, can you sharpen arguments faster than your competition? The leverage comes from pairing what you know with how well you can direct the tool. Domain expertise multiplied by AI fluency equals amplification. Without the expertise, the AI is just noise. Without fluency, you’re leaving most of the capability on the table. The question isn’t whether AI will replace you. It’s whether someone who knows how to use it better will.

Huang sees it differently. He calls it “expertise in artistry,” which sounds dramatic but makes sense when you think about it. The real skill isn’t using AI. It’s knowing what to ask for and how to refine it. “Learning to interact with AI is not unlike being really good at asking questions.” If you’re a doctor, can you use AI to catch diagnoses you’d miss? If you’re a lawyer, can you sharpen arguments faster than your competition? The leverage comes from pairing what you know with how well you can direct the tool. Domain expertise multiplied by AI fluency equals amplification. Without the expertise, the AI is just noise. Without fluency, you’re leaving most of the capability on the table. The question isn’t whether AI will replace you. It’s whether someone who knows how to use it better will.
