Rahul Vohra on how to measure product/market fit Rahul Vohra is the founder and CEO of Superhuman. He was looking for a metric to measure product/market fit so that he and his team could optimize, and he came across the following methodology from Sean Ellis: Simply ask your users: “How would you feel if you could no longer use the product?” with three options: (1) not disappointed, (2) somewhat disappointed, or (3) very disappointed. It turns out that the benchmark for product/market fit across hundreds of venture-backed startups is 40% of respondents saying “very disappointed”. And as Rahul puts it: “If more than 40% of your users would be very disappointed without your product, then you should focus on growing your company. If less than 40% of your users would be very disappointed without your product, then you’ll probably struggle to grow.” 40% may not sound like a lot, but it’s an incredibly hard benchmark to beat. For example, Slack posed this to 731 customers early in the company’s history, and 51% said they would be very disappointed without Slack. One might expect a terrific product like Slack to have a score of 60-80%, but that wasn’t the case. Rahul’s explanation of why the response options are focused on disappointment rather than happiness is interesting too: “I think the reason behind that is that if you ask people how they feel about a product and you give them positive potential responses, I think it invites more bias. People are more likely to be polite. And it also doesn’t get to the heart of the matter which is: how necessary has your product become in people’s lives? If you’re trying to build a company that’s going to stand the test of time, you really do have to build a product that matters and that people ultimately come to depend on because it’s just so incredible at what it does. The lack of "feature design" is why so many products over time feel hollow or messy. This isn't visual design. This isn't architectural design. I thought that a short video lecture of what feature design is and a real case study of applying it in Ghostty would be helpful. Feature design is the planning step behind how you're going to solve one or more user problems with a product feature: what that feature looks like, how it feels, and not just how its going to tactically solve these specific problems, but how that solution is going to interface with the edges of other features that currently exist or are planned to exist in the future.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, on why the iPhone, the greatest consumer device ever made, is the wrong hardware for the AI era: Sam argues the iPhone's basic design wasn't made for a world where AI needs to live alongside your entire life. First of all, I think we need to criticize the fact that Elon is now abandoning Companions and focusing on the core product. And second, only Ani’s avatar is moving. Ok I went a little too hard on this Biologicals trial building. I’ve always been a big fan of biologicals, completely underutilized imo, likely because it has a bad reputation often marketed by companies as the cure for plant AIDS. I have a Biostimulant, lignin-derived, that sounds like a real dinger if it can do what it is supposed to do, so I have negotiated a good price per acre that ensures the manufacturer isn’t chasing the “hit it and quit it” mentality retailers in agriculture seem to have towards farmers. I am tracking everyone in the trial and open sourcing all the data in real time. No compilation afterwards to stroke the data, all raw and interpreted in real time. If the product doesn’t do anything, the retailer never sells that product ever again. Even easier for the farmers, I set up a chat bot in Telegram so to get the data in your dashboard and online is take a picture or type in your data. This is borne out of curiosity and dismay towards all the scammers. I’m really hoping this does some good. There is a link at the end of the video that took me an uncomfortable amount of time to make so I’m forcing you to watch it to get the link. More product data there.
